"They get free ratings because of me, and yet they don't treat us well"

Trump said this to Jeanne Pirro during an interview. To me this is perhaps Trump's biggest admission. At the end of the day, its about money and glory. He will always gripe about someone else making money "off him" or "because of him" However, when he was getting showered with admiration, he could live with it.

Trump is always unhappy about the money the media is making "off of him" because he is not getting a cut.

During the campaign, Trump would repeatedly point out that he was responsible for increasing media ratings, that the media should thank him, glorify him. He whined about the money they were making, but because he was getting the glorification from his fans he could live with that.

Now, the media is making money, the ratings are huge because of him, but because he looks bad in the media, he is really unhappy.

I never watched his show, but if it's like any other reality TV show I've heard of, people probably watched because of the constant train wreck it portrayed. "No such thing as bad publicity" may work in that venue, but politics is a bit different, his efforts to change it notwithstanding.
