John Oliver on Trump firing Comey: Does he really think we . . . are this stupid?

It’s no secret that John Oliver isn’t President Trump’s biggest fan. But the late night show host had a message for his Congress on Sunday: Don’t let the firing of James Comey go unchecked.

In the opening segment of HBO’s “Last Week Tonight” on Sunday, Oliver dove right in to discuss how the former FBI director was let go: “Surprise, everyone!” the comedian said. “Do you remember normal weeks? Because I don’t. I don’t remember what they felt like.”

Oliver bashed the way Comey was shown the door, from the termination letter that was delivered to FBI headquarters — Oliver at one point compared Trump’s signature on the letter to a “heart rate monitor of a hamster on meth” — to Trump noting that Comey had told him three times he was not under investigation.

“It is just inherently suspicious to try and put words in Comey’s mouth as you kick him out the door,” Oliver said. “That is the equivalent of a breakup text reading, ‘While I greatly appreciate you informing me on three separate occasions that I was the most enthusiastic, dexterous, and intuitive lover you ever had, I nevertheless must terminate your position as my girlfriend, eggplant emoji.’ ” [more...]

I have to start watching him more often, this just cracked me up. Perhaps the funniest line was this:

“Think about what just happened there: Trump is so desperate to appear dominant, he will rush to take the credit for anything, no matter how bad it is,” Oliver said. “If you wanted him to confess to murder, all a lawyer would have to say is, ‘Your honor, the killer could not possibly have been Donald Trump, it must have been someone much stronger and smarter and with a much hotter daughter,’ and before they finished that sentence, Trump would be yelling, ‘I did it, it was me, lock me up! Lock me up!’ ”

The stupid changing stories are the best he can do to cover his own ass. He isn't really capable of divining our minds, beyond his repeated appeals to our worst impulses.

This is Trump treading water, not pursuing some more complicated agenda.
