Mars, Nestle, Hersheys and candymakers are cutting half their treats to portions under 200 calories so people snack responsibly
Big Candy is taking a bite out of calories by cutting the size of its sweets.
Mars, Nestle, Wrigley, Lindt, Ferrara and Ferraro announced last week that they have committed to making half of their individually-wrapped goodies come in under 200 calories by 2022. This will involve some reformulations as well as trimming the portion sizes of some treats.
Mars Chocolate North America has already rebranded its King Size candy bars and sweet packs with more portionable, resealable For Sharing sizes of M&Ms, Skittles and Starburst, as well as 2 to Go versions of Snickers, Twix and Milky Way. Its also launched 100-calorie treats like the Snickers Crisper.
It plays into what the industry calls the king size category, but we dont want to call it that, Tim Quinn, Mars vice president of trade development, said when Snickers Crispers first launched. This size is not appropriate for one eating session, so we call them 4 to go. It helps for portion control.
Now, Mars and Wrigley U.S. are working with fellow candymakers Nestle (Butterfinger, KitKat), Lindt (Ghirardelli, Russell Stover), Ferrara (Brachs) and Ferraro (Nutella) to pare their sweets down to more reasonable portion sizes and lower calorie counts.
This is good, I guess. I love chocolate and have already been getting the few that still use cocoa butter and real cane sugar to delude myself into feeling as if it's better for me. The smaller portion sizes should help.

European chocolates and most "organic" chocolates still have the good stuff.

(45,404 posts)kids don't care about prices if they're not paying for it. They just receive a candy for Halloween/Easter or in their lunch or whatever and eat the whole thing instead of saving half for later.
I doubt the less product for same price is meant to screw over candy eating adults.
Fine dining and any food you purchase in Asia or Europe will offer smaller portions for higher prices. I'm not sure I empathize with people looking for value in their candy.
But if you are, I dated a hippie woman who bought raw cocoa and made her own chocolate bars at home with natural sweeteners and mixed in stuff like organic milk or nuts/fruits/spices. Her orange dark chocolate with almonds were delicious.

When tea producers when from 24 teabags to 20 teabags overnight, industry-wide, I wrote a letter to Bigelow. Of course, they had their excuse all ready: "Our customers told us they wanted more conveeeeenient packaging". Yes, their customers TOLD them to leave the price the same while taking back 4 teabags out of every box, doncha see?
When a can of tuna went from 7 oz. to 6.5 oz., to 6 oz. to 5 oz., I called Starkist and asked how long before we are buying 1 oz. cans of tuna. Their response? "Oh, sir, we took out mostly water."

And the packaging of each individual piece adds to the overall price of the product.

(45,404 posts)People are not going to be choosing between candy and health care. Less product for the same price means people will buy less of it if they're on a fixed income.
I think this is a good thing. And smaller portions are a hell of a lot more honest than replacing cocoa butter with vegetable oil and then make subtle changes to the packaging for violating federal laws defining chocolate. Which these assholes did in 2008.

It's crazy.
I love chocolates and I'm still very disciplined about how much I eat.
