Chris Cornell's death ruled suicide

Chris Cornell, the Seattle-born rock guitarist who killed himself after a Wednesday concert in Detroit, was a central figure in the 1990s grunge movement and had been one of its most enduring stars.

His death at 52 was ruled a suicide by hanging, the Wayne County, Michigan medical examiner said Thursday.

For fans, the tragedy marked a sort of a bookend to the 1994 suicide of Kurt Cobain, grunge's king.

This news is just so sad. I watched him a month ago when he appeared on CBS Saturday Morning. He seemed fairly happy. Based on that interview I did not see this coming. I guess only those closest to him could have seen this coming.

Depressed people can "look happy" for everyone. It's a burden for some to try and be this way for others.

I'm sorry he didn't get the help he needed.

A thread of depression ran through so many of his lyrics that was impossible for his fellow depressives to miss. He must have fought it for decades, as well as his well-known addiction.

My sympathies to his family.

"RIP Chris Cornell, one of the greatest rock singers. A friend of mine saw the Detroit show last night & said Cornell was disturbingly "off" - screaming, mumbling and not singing well at all. And that he'd seen him twice recently, in really good form, so he was shocked at how off it was. Then to read this in the morning, fuck."

You just can never tell what is going on inside someone's head.

I never got into his music (the rock artists I grew up were Nirvana, Hole, Pearl Jam. Smashing Pumpkins, R.E.M., Stone Temple Pilots, Garbage, etc.) but my condolences go out to his family, friends, and fans.

Somehow missed them. When I did learn more, did not get inspired to get their music.

No. For pop culture writer Jon Schuppe it's a bookend.

For fans, family, and friends it's just a tragedy.
