Donald Trump, whose populist message and promises to help American workers propelled him to the White House, is set to issue a budget proposal on Tuesday that instead takes aim at the social safety net on which many of his supporters rely.
Rather than breaking with Washington precedent, Trumps spending blueprint follows established conservative orthodoxy, cutting taxes on the wealthy, boosting defense spending and taking a hatchet to programs for the poor and disabled potentially hurting many of the rural and low-income Americans that voted him into office.
The budget proposal underscores the wide gulf between campaigning and governing, even for a president who promised to rewrite the presidential rule book.
The presidents budget plan calls for more than $1 trillion in cuts to a wide range of social programs with millions of beneficiaries, from farm subsidies to federal student aid. That includes a $600 billion cut to Medicaid over 10 years, despite Trumps repeated promises on the campaign trail not to cut the program. The budget also takes an ax to the federal food stamp program and Social Security Disability Insurance. Trump also proposes some of the deepest cuts to agriculture subsidies since Ronald Reagan, squeezing out nearly $50 billion over 10 years.

(68,868 posts)I feel bad for non-Trump voters who will be hurt by this, but the Trump voters who get hurt by his policies have no one to blame but themselves.

(58,619 posts)unfortunately, the rest of us get to suffer from it too.
Thankfully, the proposal is never the final budget, but I have no faith that the Repubs in Congress will do much to fix it. Hell, they've been crying for that kind of shit for decades.

(16,781 posts)Trumplethinskin was quoted saying after winning the Nevada Caucus in 2016. Poorly-edudated they are, ALL of them who voted for Trump. ALL of them who fell for his CON JOB of a campaign with promises of a Wall, "Lock her up", and more.
Scandal after scandal has plagued Trumplethinskin since before and after the election. Now the the reality is going to set in that those voters in the states that heavily depend on SNAP, Medidaid, and other Federal monies, are going to suffer the most. States where Unemployment is the highest because wages are supressed due to Corporations like Walmart who refuse to raise their workers up with cheap imports from China and elsewhere. The Coal Industry? Gag me with a spoon.
