(14,154 posts)With turning it into charges of a partisan witch hunt right before the election if Obama said anything.
One of Obamas biggest mistakes. Its all hindsight sure, and he, like everyone else, thought Hillary was going to win regardless. So why tempt fate and throw them that ammunition that would have been fired, full guns blazing, from Fox News 24/7?
Obama was a terrific President, but he was also a play-it-safe politician. He was a pragmatic to a fault and thus taken advantage of because of that.
I know it wasn't just Obama's decision not to publicize it. I'm sure Democratic leadership personnel, maybe even those connected with Hillary's campaign, who knew about it encouraged him to keep his yap shut. But he was the President, he could have said, this is too important to keep quiet as its our nation's security and our democratic system that is at risk here. This goes beyond party loyalty.
And I also think it would have not been as detremental as those top Dems thought it would be. At least it would have exposed doubt in some true Trump believers. It would have evened the playing field that each was being investigated. And one for using an unsecured email server, and the other for treason. I think it would have been more than ok for the public to know earlier.

(5,730 posts)Forward in a NYT op ed, and Obama stopped it. He didn't want to appear partisan, and he thought Hillary would win.
Very sad to think that he may have caved to McConnel's threats. I was thinking about this last night...I thought I might write him a letter and ask him to explain some of this in his book.
Then, there is also the matter of not making a recess Supreme Court appointment.
I miss Obama a lot and I have great respect for him, but I think he dropped the ball those last several months. I think it was inconceivable to him that DT could be elected.

This reminds me of when I did sex harassment cases, no witnesses would come forward, as they were afraid. However, if they knew the truth or had seen acts, when they saw the victim going down, they would finally come forward.
If Ryan and McConnell fall, as they should, I hope they die in jail.

Report: Top GOP Lawmaker Was Recorded Saying He Thought Trump Was on Putin's Payroll
http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2017/05/mccarthy-trump-russia-payroll
<snip>
"There's two people I think Putin pays: [Rep. Dana] Rohrabacher [R-Calif.] and Trump," McCarthy said, according to the Post, which reports that it obtained and verified a recording. (A spokeman for Rohrabacher denied the allegation; Trump has also denied any coordination with Russia.)
Spokesmen for Ryan and McCarthy told the Post that the exchange was meant as a joke, and there's no evidence in the story that McCarthy was aware of any evidence to support the claim that Trump or Rohrabacher was on the Russian payroll. Regardless, the conversation provides some insight into what GOP congressional leaders apparently thought about candidate Trump, who by then had essentially secured the Republican presidential nomination.
The Post published this story just as news was breaking that the Department of Justice had appointed a special counsel to investigate ties between Trump's presidential campaign and Russia.
------------------------
It was not a joke - it was a coup

NY Mag. The case for why Paul Ryan really thinks Russia pays Trump.
http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2017/05/the-case-for-why-paul-ryan-really-thinks-russia-pays-trump.html
Last night, the Washington Post reported on a 2016 conversation, between members of the House Republican leadership team, concerning Donald Trumps shady ties to Russia. Theres two people I think Putin pays: Rohrabacher and Trump, said Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy. No leaks
This is how we know were a real family here, replied House Speaker Paul Ryan.
It is possible, as the Post acknowledges, that the comments were made in jest. The transcript records laughter all around. But there are several reasons to suspect that McCarthy and Ryan were speaking honestly about their suspicion that Trump received money from Putin. First, spokesmen for Ryan and McCarthy insisted the comments were a joke only after they forcefully denied the conversation ever took place at all and then were told a recording existed. The fallback explanation has less presumptive credibility when the initial explanation has been debunked.
snip
And fifth, Trump, Ryan, and McCarthy are all cooperating to hide Trumps financial information. House Democrats have introduced bills to require the president to disclose his tax returns, which could reveal his financial relationship with Moscow. Ryan and McCarthy could approve those if they wanted to. Instead, they are supporting Trump by quashing them. Whether and to what extent Trump has gotten income from Putin cannot be known because Ryan and McCarthy want it not to be known.
No leaks, all right? Ryan says to his fellow Republicans in the recording. This is how we know were a real family here
Whats said in the family stays in the family.

Paul Ryan & Republican Establishment Used Hacked Info From Russia Against Democrats:
Let's not forget that a super PAC tied to Paul Ryan used material provided by Russia's hacking of the DNC and DCCC.
It was known that Russia had stolen material from the DNC and DCCC and a Paul Ryan Super PAC and as well as other Republican groups used it.
It wasn't just Hillary Clinton being attacked. It wasn't just Trump benefiting. There's potentially more collusion than just that between Trump's team and Russia.
