Just caught it out of the corner of my eye, but I think they just said that the Brits wanted to keep the name of the bomber out of the news so that they could better work on finding out if he had help, or was connected to a larger op, but they had to publish the name because US sources had revealed it.
I hate to make assumptions, but I doubt we would have leaked the name if it sounded like it belonged to a middle age white guy
Edited to add that the Brits probably wanted the name witheld so that the people who potentially helped him wouldn't go underground

(18,220 posts)His name was in the news this morning. I believe it was a spokesman for Manchester pd that identified him to the press...
- I see from reading the other link this CBS information had not come from English authorities but US

(115,280 posts)It's as likely to be the result of incompetence as anything else, since there now seems to be a whole lot of that going on in Dolt 45's administration.

Freedman, professor of war studies at Kings College, London, was asked in a tweet why the US would have disclosed the name. Freedman replied: An American colleague suggests simple indiscipline. Showing off what they know.
We are in very deep shit with this clown as president!

(31,805 posts)Not even a link. But that aside it is ridiculous. The idea that if this guy had others working with him and they would not have immediately gone underground is crazy.

(15,192 posts)And it would not be unusual for a bomb maker to make several bombs for several people and think...hey they haven't identified the bomber yet so I'm good. More likely though, like the article stated, the law enforcement and counter terrorism folks probably wanted time to search the guys home and question folks in his circle without a media circus.
Who knows how many people in his periphery have started deleting social media info and contacts... even if they are completely innocent.
All that makes the job of policing harder.
Not to mention that the Brits wanted it kept out of the news until THEY were ready to share it. We have no reason to step on their toes, but we did.

(31,805 posts)But thanks for asking. Anyone working with this guy would have known beforehand when the attack would take place and would have taken any precautions they could to avoid being found. This is not a TV show. I think it is fine if the British don't want to share info. That way they can do all the leaks by themselves -- which they have done plenty. I hope the U.S. stops sharing with them also.

(5,611 posts)name of suspect and pictures of possible parts of bomb. I have no idea how this story will develop but our press (especially the NYTimes and WaPo) has to be EXTREMELY careful not to be taken in by false stories of accused of leaking key info. CNN was also discussing a story about a "fake Russian intel document" that may have misled Comey and WaPo (again an attack on the newspapers that have been crucial w/the Trump Russia info). .
