http://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/news/335435-watergate-prosecutor-social-media-changes-white-houseA former Watergate special prosecutor said on Friday that social media and the internet have dramatically escalated the pace of the law enforcement investigation into possible collusion between President Trump's campaign and the Kremlin.
"The biggest difference is the existence of social media and the internet, so the news is spreading much faster and is available to everyone who reads to understand what's going on," attorney Jill Wine-Banks told MSNBC's Ari Melber.
That such information is being made public at such as a fast pace, she said, has made it increasingly difficult for the Trump administration to keep tabs on what has been revealed.

(40,416 posts)Plus, a presidential election intervened, 1972, my first presidential election -- I turned 21 in 1969, so I missed the constitutional amendment.
The first talk of impeachment happened the week after the Saturday Night Massacre, October 20, 1973, 16 months after the break-in. The House Judiciary Committee didn't debate articles of impeachment until summer of 1974. At that time, Nixon had less than two months left in office.
So yup! It took a lot of time.
Patience, my DU friends. Patience!
My best to you all.

(31,810 posts)I was born in February 1973 - but I've read Woodward and Bernstein's book. A lot of people my age might only be familiar with the movie and for the sake of great story telling might be under the impression it only took a few months.
They pulled significant events and dramatic events for the film . . . Not the tedious detailed work those two guys had to do.
I would suggest those who were not born or way too young to remember read the book.
As good as Woodward and Bernstein were it might have taken them only 6 months in today's environment.
I believe the clock didn't start ticking until Friday last week. IE we are only 10 days into this.

(152 posts)So yes I'm old enough. Let me ask you..do you believe as Comey does? That this is "just like Watergate"?
I think this is much worse than Watergate -- and much more complicated to untangle. Watergate didn't involve foreign espionage.

(14,565 posts)Woodward and Bernstein were nothing without sources. I seriously doubt sources of that type will be independent and gutsy enough in this environment.
I have no doubt Trump is more of a crook than Nixon but I suspect he covered it well enough via decades of practice and will escape. Then when he is cleared with nothing more than a minor wordplay slap he'll twist it violently in his favor and use it to energize his base and become even more vengeful and extreme.
I was in junior high during Watergate. I had afternoon shift during the baby boom era and overcrowded schools so I hated leaving at midday and going to school. I would actually stay the mornings at my grandparents' home very often solely because it was closer to school and therefore I'd miss less of the morning coverage before beginning my walk to school.
I remember the proclamations that Watergate would set back the GOP for decades, that no one would trust them. My grandfather was an old man at the time. He died in fall 1976. But he was very astute, and originally from western Texas. He laughed at the notion that Republicans would suffer long term. Only at that point did I realize that there were far more conservatives than liberals. My Papa described what it was like in those Texas living rooms and barber shops and workplaces, that one party had everything twisted in its favor, regardless of reality.
