(9,527 posts)The tractor radically cut down the time it took to plow a field for example. Inevitably as people iterate an activity, they will get faster or find a better way to do it.

(13,340 posts)And there is plenty of work on a farm. The percentage of labor dedicated to agriculture has steadily declined. It will continue to do so. We must adapt to change, not fear it.

(19,038 posts)We are so close to having real Artificial Intelligence. People have no clue how the world is about to change.
In the next 25 years the world will change more than the previous 50.
Our government needs to start preparing for 4 in 10 jobs to be eliminated by AI which some think will happen by 2030. Computers can already learn and they are already showing real creativity. It won't be in terms of my job being replaced by an AI it will be in terms of a single AI replacing 500 engineers or eventually a single AI replacing all the actuaries in the country, or a single AI writing a billion lines of executable code in a few seconds.
What are you going to do for a living? We are so close to having machines pass humanity in most conceivable capabilities.

(22,031 posts)With the continual advances in artificial intelligence, our world moves closer and closer to the dystopia of the Terminator films.
Unless we're already there and reality is more like The Matrix.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend, CK_John!

(4,826 posts)My dad, an architect and union hater used to complain that the unions set a limit on the number bricks the union bricklayers could lay a day of 800. He said many could do much more without any problems and the union restriction was just a way to keep the guys from earning more and getting jobs done faster.
That machine looks great on a big straight wall with no windows of doors. The time consumer is the corners, inside and out, openings not to mention fireplaces, chimneys. You are going to see a lot of other jobs going to automation before the bricklayer.
That said, bring on the guaranteed income to make sure the economy brings along the people rather than having the capitalists leave them behind with no one to buy their products.
