According to the linked story, Woods failed all field sobriety tests. It goes on to say that when asked, he was unable to recite the alphabet backwards, nor was he able to recite the national anthem backwards.
Seriously?!?
This is setting people up to fail, period. The vast majority of the population couldn't pass these tests sober, let alone under duress. I know the police are here to "protect and serve", but the tactics they employ frequently irk me. These two particular "field sobriety tests" are ridiculous and unfair. Shit, I'll bet 90% of our police officers couldn't pass these tests!

(81,847 posts)He knew he wasn't feeling well and pulled over. Did they really accomplish something with this? Hopefully the jury or judge has some wisdom on this. I'd ask for a jury trial.

(25,586 posts)He was asked to recite the alphabet backwards and when asked if he understood what they wanted he said "Yes, recite the national anthem backwards."
The police don't care if you can actually do the alphabet backwards in a test, they're watching your reactions and ability to focus on the task.

And yes, the purpose is to see how they respond in general.

(52,126 posts)"He failed all of the field tests, including reciting the alphabet backwards. On that particular test, Woods said he understood what was being asked of him before saying, Yes, recite the entire national anthem backwards. Ultimately, after several attempts, he completed the task."
based on "on that particular test", i take this to mean the actual test was still reciting the *alphabet* backwards, but when they asked if he understood that they were asking him to recite the *alphabet* backwards, tiger said "yes, recite the *entire national anthem* backwards".
presumably the officers then said "no, we asked you to recite the *alphabet* backwards.

(814 posts)we wouldn't have been able to pass the tests sober: "passing" means you execute every test that the officer gives you perfectly. We also agreed that if we were ever in that situation we'd decline any field tests and have our blood tested.

(25,586 posts)Officers are watching to see you if you can focus on a mental task while still maintaining physical equilibrium. "Divided attention" tasks often cause impaired individuals to sway, experience knee buckle, or otherwise fail to stay balanced when not focusing on balance.

(442 posts)It doesn't appear that Woods was asked to recite the National Anthem backward, per the story.....
"In co-operation with the officers on the scene, Woods stepped out of the vehicle to perform field sobriety tests. He failed all of the field tests, including reciting the alphabet backwards. On that particular test, Woods said he understood what was being asked of him before saying, Yes, recite the entire national anthem backwards. Ultimately, after several attempts, he completed the task."

(9,886 posts)and fairly intelligent and I couldn't recite the alphabet backwards.
Codeine
(25,586 posts)cause you to sway, stumble, buckle at the knees, or experience other equilibrium issues. That's really the point of a divided attention task. Nobody really cares if you get the reverse alphabet right; hell, the officer probably wouldn't even realize if you made a mistake. He's watching your physical state during the test.

(16,646 posts)One of the six times I've "walked the line" (you own a 2 seat red sports car on a weekend and see how many times you get pulled over). "Passed" them all, but I always hated the alphabet one because you had to do it "rhythmically". On about the 4th time, I said "aw, crap, not that one". He asked why and I explained I could do it backwards, but I couldn't do it "rhythmically". So he asked if I had a college degree and I said yes I did, in engineering. So asked if I could count backwards from 100. I said in binary or logrithmically. He said "just count backwards!", so I did. Didn't get past 97. All he wanted to hear and see was me talk and stand at the same time (while he shown a darn flashlight in my eyes). If you're "passing" it doesn't really take long to see.
