(53,947 posts)The key difference is, Kathy Griffin apologized. Immediately. She did not double down or say she was sorry IF someone was offended. She said she was wrong period and made no excuses.
MichMary
(1,714 posts)that she wasn't sorry until someone tipped her off that the Secret Service frowns on that sort of thing. Self-serving apology.

(37,748 posts)What specifically lead you to that "distinct impression?" Post hoc, ergo prompter hoc, or something less fallacious in nature?
MichMary
(1,714 posts)and she said something about realizing -after- all the blowback just how unacceptable it was. It was pretty terrible, which she SHOULD have known before she did it.

(18,497 posts)I oppose it now. "wrong" does not become "right" because they did it

(10,001 posts)But she is a professional comedian. I remember when Gilbert Gottfried (another comedian I could live without) got dropped from Aflac for the outcry over a too soon tsunami joke. Backlash happens. She is trying to cut her losses by apologizing and will get some more free air time from it.
She could have just claimed the head was the likeness of Alec Baldwin. Trump lovers would not have minded that.

(50,237 posts)After 8 years of having Obama lynched, shot and many other despicable things, I can't see spending any time talking about this. Remember all the photos of the Trump boys and their dead wild game. That's much more offensive since the animals were living, breathing, beautiful beings pre-Trump.

(8,445 posts)Griffin gave them the ammunition, which was stupid on her part. I remember many of us making jokes about Dubya, and in retaliation (and out of pure hatred) they went WAY overboard about President Obama and our last real First Lady. The jokes about Dubya were mild. The things they said and depicted about President Obama were extreme and disgusting. I'm just not feeling the right-wingers outrage about Griffin's thing. They just want a reason to clutch their damned pearls.
Yeah, I know we should go high when they go low, but the continual assault by the right on all things good and decent gets old.

(9,670 posts)This denotes hate. Yes, I despise him too, but not so much that I want to go all al Qaeda on him.
A funnier scene would have been Trump sans hairpiece in leg irons and prison orange behind bars in the orangutan section of the public zoo.

(4 posts)She just isn't that funny - never has been as far as I'm concerned. She does the left more harm than good with this weird stuff. This only distracts from the real issues. It's a waste of time and makes her look like an idiot!

(11,238 posts)I get that it was supposed to shock, and she prides herself for humor in poor taste, but I don't see her point. I wonder if she has gotten any positive feedback from anyone.

(111,163 posts)especially with the amount of gore. It just triggers a lot of people who have seen too many videos of Islamic nutjobs beheading dead men. Her career will suffer for a while from this one.
Sorry, Kathy, some jokes are just too gross to get off the ground.

(2,559 posts)Seen as a very acid comment on Trump's attack on Megyn Kelly for asking him tough questions, it makes some sense. Still in bad taste, but consider the subject, which is the pinnacle (or nadir?) of Bad Taste.

(37,748 posts)Moe once chopped off one of Larry's legs when they were travelling to El Dorado. Curly thought it was funny. So did I. I think Chaucer would have as well. It was part and parcel of the early twentieth century slap-stick shtick.
Longinus, Brutus and others were portrayed to have not merely cut off Ceasar's head, but his fingers, toes and genitalia as well. It was part and parcel of the Classical Elizabethan Literature shtick.
Doom paintings of the middle ages were much more crass, grotesque and monstrous than anything Ms. Griffin has ever done. It was part and parcel of the Last Judgment in Christian eschatology shtick.
But then again, I don't pretend to posses a righteous and absolute moral authority, and project that judgement onto what is, by definition, mere Juvenalian satire. Seems to be part and parcel of a newly discovered "Concern shtick" by the very ones who yet cheer on Beavis & Butthead as socially relevant and full of humor... to better illustrate how enlightened their own humor really is.

(18,748 posts)It looks very restrictive & it's not flattering to her natural shape. The tie-and-puffy-sleeves look bothers me; it's too reminiscent of 80's comedy movies. Although -> of that blue she's wearing, I'm a fan.

(9,808 posts)To myself, mostly, and I don't have a following.
I spent the last eight years (in no particular order)
- watching multiple fraternities and high school students festoon campus trees with nooses
- living through a pack of feral man-baby LARPers threatening Federal agents with rifles because the feral man-baby LARPers wouldn't pay their goddam, below-market rent
- then those same feral man-baby LARPers occupy a Federal wildlife refuge and not be convicted
- seeing the legitimately elected President and his family abused daily, including being burned in effigy and hanged in effigy
- enduring another feral pack of man-baby LARPers cyber-stalking, real-world stalking, SWATting, and slandering women who had the temerity to talk about video games while most of the press considered it a minor tantrum amongst the geeks, except that "minor tantrum" was the genesis of the Alt-Reich.
- witnessing dozens of innocent people of color be murdered by cops, and thousands be abused short of death by the same, and millions have their economic lifeblood leeched out to support those self-same cops via abusive fines while their right to redress grievances and vote is stripped away
- defending our eroding reproductive rights while old white men grin and giggle
- and surviving hundreds of other aggressions, ranging from micro to egregious, perpetrated by the racist, sexist, homophobic, feral supporters of King Shit of Turd Mountain.
I don't find the image at all funny. I do find it powerful and cathartic. Doesn't mean I'm going to run to IKEA and pick up the JACOBIN kit. But goddammit... a lot of us have Fuck of a LOT to be furious about.
Tumbrels. Tricoteuses.
