I got to think that there is a money reason for pulling out of this agreement. What's the money motivation behind this?

At minimum. I think they hold coal interests.
Politically, though, I don't think it's a net support gain for Trump.

(58,604 posts)the biggest winners would be the Russians, I think. They stand to gain the most by maintaining the world's dependence on fossil fuels, and by the opening up of the arctic to drilling. Most of the oil producers in the lower latitudes can see the end of their oil reserves by now, and only the high priced, low yield fields like the tar sands are opening up. Oil as fuel is losing ground to renewables and natural gas. The green movement is starting to have a real effect on oil profits.
So, I'd guess Putin is pulling Trump's strings on this one to prop up the Russian economy. They don't have much else.

(59,498 posts)All have huge fossil fuel assets. The Koch brothers are largely in coal, which is rapidly losing its position as the cheapest source of fuel - with even the Gary Cohn saying that coal is on the way out.
Maybe we should tell Donald that pulling out helps IRAN, which also has lots of oil.

The US would be on the hook for the biggest chunk of this.
