The problem with America is the american people have lost their way, period. This website proved it. I'm out. I am close to retirement and i have made plans, taken action to shield myself from the american people who have become self destructive fools. Goodbye.

(5,486 posts)anymore. We're Democrats or Republicans. People have latched their identity to their political party to such an extent that trying to have a debate always degenerates into kindergarten-level name-calling. This country is in serious trouble if we can't pull together.
Democrats, Republicans, Liberals, Libertarians, alt-whatevers, or whatever you call yourself, we're all Americans.
I don't know what is making Americans hate each other now, but it's a shame.

(5,486 posts)Politics is now treated as a team sport, where the objective is to cling to your team and block out any disagreement. I have no problem with internal politics that sometimes turns nasty. There's a difference between that and the current attitude, which is almost cult-like.
The shooter was an example of the political terrorism that is being encouraged by an increasingly toxic atmosphere in this country. I expect many more incidents (though I hope I'm wrong). I'm not saying "Democrats are encouraging terrorism" - I'm saying that the general tone has turned poisonous.
Basically, we've gotten so mentally lazy that we (the American people) treat our own side as doing no wrong, and the other side as villains. This leads to the country breaking up into factions constantly at war with each other. Something needs to change.
I believe that the issues start with the President, who has done nothing but spew venom since his first day in office.

(967 posts)When they are taking away our civil rights, women's rights, Health Care, and putting us in jeopardy with foreign policy, we should be expected to stand up and speak out. Fight it with everything we have. At the very least.
This is not about, "both parties do it". One party and a party outside of the Democratic Party. Lets us at least argue from an honest basis of conversation.

(12,640 posts)It's not a hate issue, it's like the old saying of trying to teach a pig to sing. You won't get anywhere, and you'll only annoy the pig.
There's a significant group in America that just wants to be left alone to live in their own little worlds. They like living under an authoritarian "leadership" that gives them the simplicity Manichean choices in life, and have no interest in governance or diplomacy - and certainly not in anything that happens outside their sphere. They will attack anything that threatens their comfort.
They're not going to debate, and they're not going to listen, until reality slaps them upside the face in no uncertain terms. They live in an Establishment.
Democrats operate in Coalitions. Blue Dogs, Yellow Dogs, and True Believers - and just plain folks with a wide range of interests who generally like to look for solutions.
Locally, they may have established groups with their own socio-political hierarchy (including mini-Bosses that dictate the party focus in some areas), but on the whole, when they come together, Democrats represent a very wide, very colorful and sometimes contradictory coalition of progressive interests, where negotiation and governance are critical to maintain forward momentum - for everyone, not just a few.
Not every issue has just two sides, and no solution can be either "perfect" or "totally wrong".
And that's why DU sometimes seem to be "mean" to single issue/radical posters who come in to "debate". Because most of the time, such attempts to "debate" are thinly veiled attempts to proselytize - the "debater" isn't going to listen to anyone who might possibly contradict his or her worldview, or point out flaws in the argument. Instead, they attack everyone who doesn't agree with them.
Most times, just pointing out the weaknesses or attempts to explain (not excuse) a situation or opinion ends up being a mud fight when one side just doesn't want to admit that someone else has just as valid - or more valid - evidence for a different solution or even just viewpoint.
You can't have a discussion with someone who does not want to acknowledge or have a modicum of respect where you come from.
Oh, and venting or pointing out an injustice or problem is not "discussing". Lots of people make that mistake...

(5,486 posts)It's one of the biggest reasons things have gone sour, imo. There's a sense that anyone who disagrees is an idiot who needs to be mocked rather than debated with.
DU is still much better than any other site on the internet, though. It's really one of the only places where someone can debate others without being subjected to 12-year-old name calling, annoying memes, page-consuming trolling, and generic insults (snowflake, etc.).

Also this. Thank you. Pin that on the front page and the world would be a better place.
If you haven't listened to Joe Biden's recent interview on NPR's Fresh Air I think you would enjoy it. It hits these points exactly.
Side note: DU in general has been under intense Troll Attack for a while (this week was terrible I think). I hope the OP isn't mistaking trolls for the real and kind people who generally post here.

I know what's making Americans hate - Trump. It's as plain as a pikestaff. That was how he got elected - he went for the "I hate someone" vote - and his malignancy, narcissism, and unfitness for office makes people hate him.

(7,391 posts)Nothing specific to say about this magnificent forum after 293 posts, just a blanket condemnation and a complete abdication of all civic responsibility. Which happens to people, you know. It's a natural thing for sick creatures to crawl away and hide.
The truth is that staying in the fight and continuing to express opinions takes courage and strength, which fails all of us at some point. Me, I take great solace in this place. I'm amazed at the river of information and analysis, never seen anything like it, love every bit of it. But maybe someday I'll lose my heart as you have and withdraw to get closer to the dirt-nap stage.
You have failed to shame us, however, if that was your intent. You say nothing relevant or instructive except about your internal world view, which is clearly dismissive of all human beings that are not you. Classic. Consider, though, that declaring failure and opting only for self-preservation is not a brave or kind thing to do. Human, yes. Primal, yes. Worthy? Thoughtful? Not so much.
Luck of the former Democratic Undergrounder to you, short though your time may have been.
I'm not leaving until there's a tombstone in my avatar.
