Funny quote from another board with more than a kernel of truth

King Curmudgeon II • a day ago
It's time for the press, the media, the comedians, and Mueller & Co. to step up the attacks, the ridicule, the snooping into his business deals, and just turn the dial all the way to eleven in the overall assault on the fat slob. He's got a breaking point, and he's getting close to it. It'll be fun to watch the ripple effects when the fat jerk snaps.

He is going to want to do something crazy. General Mattis loves our country will stand up to him. I don't know what happens next.

3. So...what actually happens if he decides to "push the red button" in a fit of rage...safeguards ?

The Saturday Night Massacre gave us a look at what happens in the midst of a constitutional crisis. But what i the safeguards in a military crisis.

I agree with your point about Mattis and I'm looking for some help understanding how that could matter in a military crisis. To whom does the military actually report? I know we have "Commander in Chief"...does the military report into the WH through SecDef or is there a role for the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs. And, taking a page from Ollie North, can the WH just call up a General (who might be sympathetic) and issue a direct order? Lastly, what the hell actually happens if he pushes the button - is there someone somewhere that brings some adult supervision to the table or, like in the movies, it is a group of isolated military sitting in a silo or a sub who have to make the go/no go decision on their own.

I recall some story about a Russian guy who got the order and decided for himself that he was not going to be the one to actually fire the missile. (hopefully that's not a cat in the microwave urban myth).

Seriously - is there a check step ???

It's always been assumed that the that call from the Prez ordering the strike is the very last step in a very careful and deliberative process. All the checks are 'before' him. So no, if the POTUS were to order a nuclear strike there's no review of that move and no formal mechanism in place as a fail-safe. Missiles away!

That the brass have put in place a firewall between the 'button' and tRump for civilization and the worlds safety.

ETA: it would be negligent on their part if they haven't. tRump is not well, he's a loose cannon if you will. Dangerous mo'fo' if ever there is one.

Trump's gonna blow, all right. At this point only SNL and Colbert can make me laugh much.
