The tRumps: Reminding Us That The Rich Lead Consequence-free Lives

As Leona Helmsley metaphorically remarked, "only the little people pay taxes."

It's a meme that applies to every facet of life in these United States, where the rich are treated as royalty and the rest of us lead our lives as indentured servants (albeit at varying levels of creature comforts we are allowed to enjoy to blind us to the reality of income inequality).

In this country, being rich means that you are better than, smarter than, prettier than the rabble. You lead a life where your not getting laid in high school is the equivalent of the rabble dodging bullets in Nam. You lead a life of privilege that is conferred by birth, and because of that, you are placed into positions of power where your opinion and prejudices effect the lives of the rabble.

So is anyone surprised at the latest bombshell concerning Jr Don? Sure, they'd rather not get caught colluding with the Russians, but what difference does it make? Will there be any real consequences? Most likely not. Why? Because you're filthy rich. You're royalty. End of discussion.

The rich: they're better than us. Their actions only effect them if said actions redound favorably to their bottom line. There are no consequences when things go bad, because...well, they're rich, and you aren't.

If Don Corleone had been elected president he'd probably had behaved in much the same way. Not all rich people behave like the Trumps; I've never heard that, for example, Warren Buffet or Bill Gates (who are much richer than Trump) have a long-standing practice of cheating and refusing to pay people who do business with them, or have something like 3,000 lawsuits against them.

Trump is a particular breed of rich asshole - he combines wealth that he didn't work for in the first place with pathological arrogance, in a career in a notoriously corrupt profession: high-end commercial real estate. Because of his wealth, fame and reputation for crushing adversaries he has been able to get away with abusive, sometimes downright criminal behavior. Nobody has been able to stand in his way. He regards the presidency as his personal fiefdom, just another branch of the Trump Organization, and it never occurred to him that there might be opposition he can't control.
