The Virginia General Assembly is literally for sale today - cash and carry

Before General Assembly Building is demolished, 41 years of history up for sale Tuesday

Virginia is hosting a high-rise yard sale Tuesday.

The public has been invited — by an item in the two-year state budget, no less — to browse each floor of the 11-story General Assembly Building on July 11 and buy whatever can be carried, dismantled or trucked away before a wrecking ball demolishes all but one graceful facade of the legislature’s home for the past 41 years.

School systems, local governments and state agencies also will get the first shot at what remains when the sale begins at 9 a.m.

The public can begin shopping at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 11, and stay until 4 p.m. “It’s cash and carry,” said Dena Potter, spokeswoman for the Virginia Department of General Services. “If you can take it away that day, that’s fine.”
