(146,284 posts)I know I've done it, myself. I used to run into Russian mineral dealers when I was in the mineral specimen business. I always spoke English to them, but listened to their conversations in Russian. My favorites were when one of the dealers in the room told another one something like, "Don't sell for less than $xx." That was very useful to me at times, since I knew the minimum price for what I was looking at.
I'd offer something less than that minimum and then come up to the minimum. Worked every time.

(146,284 posts)Any other time and I enjoy switching to another language for some practice. I can converse reasonably well in French, Spanish and Russian. I rarely get a chance, though, to have a conversation in those languages, so I try to take every opportunity to do so, unless money is at stake. Then, I can't understand or speak any of the three.
