TTA BENA, Miss. A Marine Corps KC-130 transport plane that crashed Monday in Mississippi, killing all 16 on board, included nine crew members from a Marine reserve unit based at the Stewart Air National Guard Base in Newburgh.
The refueling plane, which is based at Stewart, crashed and burned about 4 p.m. Monday in a soybean field in the Mississippi Delta, scattering debris for miles and sending a pillar of black smoke rising over the countryside.
It was the deadliest Marine crash in the U.S. or abroad since 2005.
Fifteen Marines and a Navy corpsman were on board the tanker when it corkscrewed into the ground about 85 miles north of Jackson, the state capital, military officials said. A witness said some bodies were found more than a mile away.
The Marine Corps was not releasing the names of the dead, saying it wanted to allow time for their families to be notified appropriately.
* Its hitting the area hard, we see them up all the time flying around. A friend in the unit would always have them come low over my house so I know he was there for weekend. The weekend of the 1st & 2nd Stewart hosted an air show for thousands of people.
