Montana's budget cut triggers may jeopardize university raises

Modest pay raises could be in jeopardy for Montana university employees, as the state braces for revenues falling short of expectations.

If state revenues fall below a certain level as of Aug. 15, that would trigger automatic cuts in the state budget and pay plan for the next two years.

“We don’t know absolutely yet,” Tyler Trevor, deputy commissioner for planning and analysis for the University System, said Monday. “The governor’s office is telling us to prepare for it. Revenue is not looking good.”

Asked what impact the budget triggers would have on Montana State University, Bozeman’s largest employer, Trevor said, MSU would be “just fine.”
