Something happens, and we want an account of someone involved in that something. And, that something is very important. You can fill in the blanks as to what that is...3 people see this event or are involved. So detectives are assigned to interview the 3 people. As the detectives interview, (and these are experienced, honest, and dedicated officers) they notice something peculiar..... Two of the 3, lets call them A and B, retell the "something" quite clearly and appear to be honest. When different detectives interview A and B again, and again, A and B's story stay the same. Although A and B do not know each other, they both have the same interpretation of the "something" and the same view of what they saw even though their views were from different perspectives and viewing stations
...C on the other hand is different. When C tells about the "something"..he is inconsistent. One time C talks about this, and the next time C talks about that. The detectives are surprised that C has so many different views of the event that A and B say is what it was. C seems to change his mind so much that we do not know what is real and what is not real. Even though the event, from the detectives view, was reasonably simple and easy to see and understand. A and B have no problems with "something" but C really does have a problem with relating "something" consistently. C it seems cannot get it together...and further, C has a very big stake in a certain view and outcome of.."something" C has a profit motive and needs to get a certain result from his interviews but he is still "inconsistent"...C seems to be "unreliable"..the detectives conclude. Keep in mind the detectives have interviewed hundreds of people like A B and C. And these detectives are the best and most honest that there are.. They have many years of experience in these kind of interviews of people like A B and C.
So, who do you think is telling a lie, and who is telling the truth? A ..B... or ..C

Repeated questioning is tried and true way of telling if someone is lying

Trump Jr. .....Is he A..B...or C..? You be the judge and jury.
. and.....a very famous character from the movies said it..."That's all folks" and from what I can tell that is the truth........Thank You for your service as judge and jury....

(38,414 posts)people remember that liar as an unindicted .."crook"
Then after that liar quit his job, ... someone pardoned that crook.....and the crook went off to live his life in a private and quiet way. At that point, that liar had learned to........."STFU"

(32,620 posts)A truthful person will tell the truth, whether it benefits himself nor not.
A liar will only tell the truth if it benefits him, otherwise he'll lie because it benefits him.
So you can't assume the person is lying just because it benefits himself. A really sneaky liar tells a quasi-truth that sounds good but has a twist (lie built in) that's really to his advantage. What would you call the Trump family? A bunch of sneaky liars.
