Did someone wait for Trump to implicate himself further?
flotsam
(3,268 posts)With every drip one of the actors have to amend paperwork or change their story...and if someone wants to push the point each change on the paperwork indicates another federal crime with a maximum 5 year jail sentence. For instance Jared with his contacts going from zero to over a hundred could technically face a 500 year sentence. A club like that can garner a lot of cooperation...
Didn't the AG say it was time to throw max charges on every crime? 100 counts could be charged, right?

(58,785 posts)But we know he's a very slow learner, notably about ethical issues. I suspect he still just can't get his head around the new reality that he and his family no longer can lie, delay, lie, bribe and, worse case, just settle their way out of trouble. No more Rump SOP. Try to throw money at Mueller, and it'll just become another charge.
LisaM
(27,803 posts)Well, guess what Trumpies, being in government makes you public servants. I think that is the most difficult thing for them to intellectually comprehend.
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)Emotionally or (like anything else) intellectually. I used to have hope for Ivanka, but it's unlikely her husband wouldn't be in anything like the trouble he is if her understanding was better.

Hortensis
(58,785 posts)do, generally speaking, tend to react and assign priorities somewhat differently than men, and I suspect if she had understood what any of us would have when Rump started showing viability she would fought to keep her husband from becoming so deeply involved. I wondered back then if the inevitably intense scrutiny would lead to the destruction and intense disgrace of the family. Perhaps it was way too late by then, though.
LisaM
(27,803 posts)over crooked late payment schemes, and taking them to court? Because that's the kind of guy he is.
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)I know you don't really imagine that those evicted tenants in any way have the kind of power the Kushners have set themselves against by crossing the government of the United States, represented by Mueller's Justice Department investigation at this point.
The one opens the corporation that protects them from liability to civil suits, IF their victims can afford to bring them. Big deal. Worst case, they pay a monetary settlement, and what are the chances of that?
The other: Sentencing to a federal penitentiary for violating multiple big federal laws, related to sedition, is very possible.
LisaM
(27,803 posts)His family doesn't play very nice. Though yes, they're swimming in different, more dangerous waters now.
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)Plus, she has a long history, by her own admission, of trying to develop and maintain a close relationship with a father who might at any time cut her out of his life. I've always held the door open to the possibility that some of her actions are trying to keep that from happening by doing what he expects of her and constantly demonstrating intense "loyalty." No, I'm not condoning that entirely, but it would be a basic requirement for retaining any influence with him at all. America desperately needs a rational and responsible influence in that circle.
The shoe thing? Sure, strong indication of trumpian "morality" and incompetence, including that which stems from undervaluing the very practical long-term benefits of behaving ethically. Bottom line, though, her husband's behaviors are destroying any hope I had (for our sake) that she, and he, might be fairly sensible influences on a rotten bunch. They could both end up in prison for real crimes.

Servants? Perish the thought! Servants are those poor saps we hire and then don't pay well. And then when we make a mistake, we blame them.
Criminy! At least EIGHT? And that's what we know, at this particular hour. At the rate this is going, that may wind up being revised upward, too.

BUT, since it's Republicans that have turned out to be the worst traitors in U.S. history...... crickets chirping......tumbleweeds rolling down K Street, gun sales down 50% or more, Bourbon sales up 50% or more, suicide hot-lines jammed with calls from white supremacists and alt-right losers.............Republican Armageddon.

(21,847 posts)This meeting was not held in someone's office but in a conference room. Trump employees must have seen them enter and leave.
Also, in NYC, it is not easy to gain access to offices. There is someone downstairs who asked for names and identification before allowing people up. Those things are noted. Of course, there are exceptions. Fredo could have come downstairs and told the guard that this bunch of people are with him and it is okay. Only then would there be no record of who came that day.

(35,300 posts)He functions as a kind of walking dictionary and consultant, just in case, and for clarification. Usually the translator's essential, but not always.
I've done escort interpretation (long, long ago, and was even trained in procedures and ethics) and was sidelined at times when I wasn't needed, and sometimes went through my paces either because one side didn't want it known how well they spoke English or just because they weren't confident. I look at my "fluent" students with Spanish as their first and home language and then I look at how they handle themselves in class: fluency is by topic and by style, not an all-or-nothing thing. Some Canadian in the '60s or '70s got his PhD and as a professor turned out a bunch of research and new PhDs showing how this works; of course, had they known Czech (or French) and been with it they'd have quoted the same work done in the 1920s in central Europe, but good research skills would have killed his dissertation so he was rather strongly disincentivized.
Either way the interpreter gets paid, and professional ethics say you don't have a right to a personal opinion in the matter, so that was fine by me.

(33,643 posts)Various addt'l factors must be involved to make 'collusion' ... illegal. It's not like 'murder' or 'theft'.
I've still yet to see someone post or show 'the statute' that would directly criminalize ... anything that happened in this meeting (that we know of), or indeed even of Trumps team directly enlisting Russian aid to win the election.
I'm just not sure that anything THIS outrageous has happened before in this Country, ergo nobody has had the foresight to write laws codifying the 'illegality' of TrumpCo's actions.

So the fact that there were 8 people and yet this was kept secret for nearly a year is a surprise. What is not a surprise is that it could not be kept secret much longer.
