Both the US and Britain used their war ships to stop slavery traders. Had been doing so since 1808.

Of course there was some smuggling but by 1820 it was getting not as common. If I remember correctly there were like 4-5 million slaves in the South at the start of civil war and well over 95% were born in the US.

US they were here decades before many immigrants from certain white countries were came here. In my experience the most racist whites I have seen are the ones that came over here in the early 1900s to work in the mills and mines.

The most racist are those whose ancestors were here during slavery but were too poor to own them.

The same con is still going on today...make poor whites feel superior to blacks and the exploit the hell out of the. LBJs famous quote comes to mind.

When upper class whites in the South talk about white trash the are actually making fun of the fact that they have been totally played. The rich understand the game.

Racial exploitation has its roots in economic exploitation.

And some of them are my relatives, maternal grandparents from Poland and paternal great grandparents from Ireland...
