(81,110 posts)A genuinely kind, compassionate, noble, and saintly man. Brilliant, thoughtful, deliberate, a man of faith and critically important - conscience. The things that guided him (and still do) are not of this world.
I remember during the 1976 campaign. There was one instance in which he looked straight into the camera and said "I will never lie to you." And after Nixon and the lies, double-speak, deceit, and criminality of that whole sordid Watergate ordeal, I think that's what won him the hearts of the nation.

(15,532 posts)Does anyone else remember how the Republicans tried to trash him with what he said in a Playboy magazine interview? It was when he admitted to "lusting after someone in his heart"? I'm sure that's not verbatim and it's out of context, but what a big to-do they made out of that. They also tried to trash him for his brother Billy's behavior.
He truly was an honest man, and didn't his elderly mother join the Peace Corps?
