I wish there were a Bernie Sanders figure in the republican party.

Someone who doesn't follow the leadership lockstep. Someone who thinks and votes independent of party and on behalf of constituents and country.

Someone like Millicent Fenwick.

Fenwick was a liberal Republican, and the conservatives exterminated her kind as office holders by the 1990s.

The only viable space for "independents" allied to the Republicans is even farther to the right. We won't get those until the conservatives get dethroned as the ruling ideology of the Republican Party, and don't hold your breath waiting for that.
