(53,061 posts)Democrats dominate in Phoenix and Tucson where they run unopposed.
Until recently 6 out of the 5 Congress persons were Democrat, now it is 5 to 6.
The problem is that in off year elections Democrats don't bother to vote.
If Hispanics in AZ voted at the same rate as AA in the rest of the country this would be a lean Democratic state.
Trump only won by 4% in AZ.

(53,061 posts)I live in Tucson and all of the Democrats run unopposed
Here is the local TV results which show 10 Democrats running unopposed and only 4 Republicans in Pima County
http://www.tucsonnewsnow.com/category/313285/election-results
Democrats have 4 Congressional Reps versus 5 Republicans
The total vote for Republican Congressional 1.2 million
The total vote for Democratic candidates 1.0, if you add the one district where the opposition was a Green candidate then it would be 1.1 million
In Tucson Mayor/City council all Democratic party members and no Republican opposition, I understand the same is true in Phoenix.
The Democratic Party is not weak in Arizona except in the off year elections when a lot of Democrats stay home.
It is true that Arizona is highly Balkanized which means that those people living in Red areas will see lots of R only races and those in Democratic areas will see lots of D only races.
Arizona is like NC, Virginia, and Florida where the native population is increasingly older and heavily Republican but the new migrants are younger and heavily Democratic. Unless something radically changes then all 4 will eventually become strong Democratic lean states. Texas is also seeing a similar dynamic but at a slower rate.

(27,064 posts)Central Phoenix and Tempe are the only "Blue" areas.
Mesa, Scottsdale, Glendale, Peoria, Chandler, Gilbert, Sun City, are all RED.
So the metro area as a whole is still RED.
All my legislative reps, both state and national, are all Republicans.
My mayor and entire city council are all Republicans.

(53,061 posts)but the Republicans hold a narrow statewide majority and each year it narrows.
The trend line, like NC, VA, FL are all the same the net in migration and the younger generation are strongly Democratic.

(9,808 posts)It's a recent redistrict. It's not even close to compact or contiguous, and political diversity starts at Goldwater Republican and ends at Constitution party with stops in Libertarian and Sovereign Citizen.
Even Flagstaff, a university town, is liberal only by comparison to the rest of the district. Sedona is the most liberal anchor, but then there's Snowflake, Taylor, Heber, Joseph City, Williams, Woodruff and Young. All of them were Mormon diaspora, established as polygamous outposts. How much polygamy is still ongoing is up for debate (there is some, but on the down low) but there's a long cultural history of hatred and distrust of government, and half of the eastern part of the district is related by blood or marriage to the Allens and the Tenneys (her family.)
In Utah, Mormons who run for office go all Gumby to not even dogwhistle their faith, but in Northern Arizona, it's not even dogwhistled. Getting elected as a non-Mormon in that district? I'm not sure it can be done.
Allen needs a challenge, but I'm not sure a Dem can do it. I think their best chance is a moderate Republican challenge, because she's so far to the right.
Let me give an example of how crazy that district is: I attended a public high school there. I took what was called AP American History at 15. (This was the very early 90s, before Waco and Ruby Ridge.) The legal adult in the room spent most of the first semester lecturing on the New World Order, FEMA camps, Bo Gritz, the coming apocalypse, and how the Mormons would be the salvation of America, and how evil Gentiles (like me, the only one in the class) would sell themselves into (his sexual) slavery for a can of beans when it all fell apart. I started walking out of class and going to the principal's office when he got going because he wasn't teaching history. I spent more time in the VP's office than in class that year. It took going to the school board four times to get him off the subject, and I was basically on independent study for the remainder of the year -- I'd be in class for attendence, but I worked in the library, the librarian directed my work and reviewed my papers -- because the legal adult would have failed every paper I wrote. He was never fired or disciplined. (Oh, and for really gross -- he lived across the street from me.) I'm the only person in his class who ever passed the AP AmHis test. The school board was 100% okay with what he was teaching; I was the problem because I insisted on reality.

(9,808 posts)The cray runs deep. I'm so sorry. (At least my bio teacher, at the same school, was not a creationist. He had to say on the first day of class that we would not be talking about creation myths or Darwin, but he covered all of the material with those of us taking the test off campus. It was bonkers, but he was committed to his students even if he had to work around the school board.)
The only advantage I got from that year of bullshit was being inoculated against conspiracy theories forever.
(Also, both Flake and Allen have serial sexual harassers and assaulters in the family.)

(27,995 posts)I spend the summers in LD6 and made a lot of calls on behalf of Nikki Bagley last year. She's a second-generation Arizona native from Prescott and served as Mayor and Councilwoman for the Town of Jerome. She currently teaches at Yavapai College. I don't know yet if she'll run again.
Allen is a complete nutcase who among other things is a proponent of the chemtrail conspiracy theory, and has called for a law requiring Sunday church attendance.
But this is a VERY red part of the state which was settled by Mormons. She, like Sen. Flake, are Mormons with strong support up here. Bagley gave her a good run for the money, so we'll see what happens next year.
