(347 posts)I think a Medicare buy-in program for 55 and older is doable. The left underestimates how difficult an actual single payer would be. It would be a massive disruption for most of the country, who get their health care from their employer (which is dumb, but that is the system).
Plus the medical industry will be totally against it. And I am not talking about some "big lobby" like the AMA or the AHIP. I am talking about your local doctor in your town. That will move people politically.

(65,148 posts)Yes there may be a temporary disruption, but we can prepare for it. The same forces in the 1930s said there would be too much disruption with the New Deal. They were wrong. It is the right program for the long run. It took a while in other countries.
Plus, profits should never determine health care decisions.

(347 posts)How its done, I don't care. We just need to understand what the current system is and recognize the political realities we live in.
In other words, we have to lower overall costs and expand access. How that happens, I don't care, but we need to be pragmatic.

(65,148 posts)Which is why I wouldn't mind a public option or Medicare at 55 buy in first if these steps help in getting us to single payer.
Welcome to DU
And I think Medicare at 55 buy in is the best option. 1. I will make the other parts of the ACA work better as it will take about the higher cost population. 2. It allows you to move to other issues. For example, I think we should focus on a universal basic income.

(68,347 posts)We can look at cost controls as well...I just don't think single payer will ever work in this country. I just want a plan...there are more insurance based plans overseas than single payer plans and some are quite good.

(20,043 posts)That way anyone can buy into Medicare at any age. Some small employers may find it's better to pay for their employees to get their insurance that way. That's kind of what Trader Joe's did for their part time employees. They paid them a stipend to buy their own insurance on the exchanges and take advantage of the subsidies.
