(19,193 posts)Just not the domesticated birds bred to have huge breasts and to gain weight rapidly. Wild Turkeys CAN fly.
I DO remember that episode of WKRP though. I almost crapped myself thinking about an entire helicopter full of Turkeys landing on a parking lot full of people. A classic moment of late 70s - early 80s TV.

(36,416 posts)They haunt our neighborhood for eleven months out of the year, then they inexplicably disappear the day before hunting season opens. I've heard they fly down to Cabo San Lucas and party from November 1st to November 30th, proof positive they are much smarter than the domesticated ones.
I really like Tim Dorsey's novels. Serge may a psychopath, but I could keep up with him on a good day and enjoy myself.

(19,193 posts)I thought most of his readers were from Florida, or people who've lived in Florida. You really have to spend some time in Florida to realize just how crazy it is there. I started out reading Carl Hiiasen, then Dave Barry, Elmore Leonard and finally settled in on Dorsey. I met him a couple of times at various events when I was living there. I went to the 2013 "Romp in the Swamp" and meeting up with that many Dorsey fans at one time was QUITE a treat!
I had to move back to New York after 4 years there. I just couldn't handle to red-necks, the heat in the summer, all the tourists, AND THE CRAZIES! Some of the people there make Serge and Coleman look like altar boys.
I know what you mean about the Turkeys as well. They DO disappear when hunting season rolls around. They're very smart birds. I guess that's why Ben Franklin wanted them named the national bird instead of the eagle. I don't hunt anymore. I'm getting too old to tramp around in the woods and fields. My last hunting experience was in Florida as a matter of fact. Wild hogs......they're everywhere down there, and some of them are BIG, and NASTY! Those boars with their incisors are lethal killing machines in their own right. I doo all of my hunting at the supermarket now. It's much safer, and easier on my old body.

(36,416 posts)When I'm freezing my butt off in forty degree California weather, I like to pretend I've transported myself to a warm climate. Yes, I'm a wussy.
J D MacDonald's Travis Mcgee series was my benchmark for decades, and should be on your list; all of your above mentioned authors would agree he was the king.
Have you read Bob Morris' Zack Chasteen? It was looking real promising, then he abruptly stopped after five books. Bummer.

(19,193 posts)We PRAY for 40 degrees where I live! I live on the shores of Lake Ontario, home of the infamous "Lake Effect Snow". Average temp. i the winter, probably around 20 degrees or so......and SNOW! LOTS of snow. Oh well, back to warmer climes.
Ah yes, Travis McGee, The 'Busted Flush' et al. I cut my teeth on those long ago, until I started getting into the Florida weirdo books. Hiaasen's character, "Skink" a.k.a. "The Governor" a.k.a. "Clinton Tyree" was my first "favorite character" of the Florida whackos until Serge came along. Hiaasen started writing children's books and was never the same again.
I take it you're in northern Cali? Anywhere near Humboldt County? Mendocino greeno, perhaps? Up further, Mt. Shasta way?
I've always wanted to drive up the PCH until it ends. That's about.......150 miles or so? It looks beautiful from the movies and pictures I've seen. There's a lot of different terrain in California, and I'd like to get out there before I get too old to enjoy it. California is a lot like N.Y. People hear "California" and all they think of is "Hollyweird". They hear "New York" and think of "Jew York City", freaking assholes. They don't take the time to think about the balance of the state, which is about 99% in both cases.
Take care, and enjoy the balance of your summer!

(30,058 posts)there could be some fixes to the ACA, work on lowering the prices of drugs and perhaps we could be successful as a nation.

(26,619 posts)It's so important. A public option would be an almost instant fix, I believe. We could even give them the credit. Just do it.

(9,426 posts)what is in it for McConnell? He is so determined that it is going to go through. There has to be a payoff for him, unless he already got that and has to produce? He is offering "bribes" to the people who do not want to vote for this crap. The RNC got large donations from Russia, plus he knew tRump was going to "win" Remember how he refused to even have hearings for Merrick Garland? He KNEW back then who was going to be in the WH. Someone has paid him a princely sum, since $$$$ is the universal language for gop traitors.
