by Jon Levine | 6:25 am, July 18th, 2017
With the defections of Republican Senators Jerry Moran and Mike Lee, the GOPs seven year quest to repeal and replace Obamacare has finally come to a close. While there is still a nuclear option involving a basic repeal with a two year reprieve window, it remains a distant moonshot.
Mere hours before the collapse Monday evening, President Donald Trump held a dinner for Republican Senators to strategize on health care. Per Politico, the tense evening came with a warning from Trump that the party would look foolish and weak if they couldnt pass repeal and individual Senators would look like dopes
At a dinner with GOP senators on Monday evening, Trump said the party would look like dopes if they couldnt pass the bill after passing a repeal bill in 2015.
<< If the Republicans have the House, Senate and the presidency and they cant pass this health care bill they are going to look weak, Trump said, according to a source familiar with the meeting. How can we not do this after promising it for years?
Trump had no idea defections were coming tonight, according to another White House official with knowledge of the meeting. Why would we have a dinner like that if we knew people were going to drop out? the official said. >>
it seems the party elected the way of dopes.

Dopes. Yeah, to put it mildly.

(6,377 posts)I can just imagine Trump at the dinner last night, courting Senators when someone walks in and whispers into his ear that the bill has been pulled because they don't have the votes.

(2,198 posts)The dark souls of the GOP have been exposed. We need to keep talking about it. Anyone who rejoiced and spent 7 years trying to take away healthcare from the most vulnerable among us is unfit to be in a position of power in this country. It has to be hung around their necks every minute of every day. Yes, by pass the media and go strait to the people. The media is still trying to cover up the darkness.

(20,835 posts)Has there ever been a less policy president? It's July and we still don't know what his Health Care plan ideas are. All we know is he thinks the bill that Congress is trying to give us is mean...a little mean. Great, can't wait for that to pass. Trump makes me ill.
