Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) has been diagnosed with a brain tumor, his office said Wednesday, throwing into doubt when and if he will return to Washington to resume his duties in the Senate.
The Mayo Clinic Hospital in Phoenix said tests revealed a primary brain tumor known as a glioblastoma associated with a blood clot above his left eye that was removed last week.
The Senator and his family are reviewing further treatment options with his Mayo Clinic care team, said the hospital in a statement. Treatment options may include a combination of chemotherapy and radiation.
McCain, 80, was treated for the blood clot last week. His office announced last Saturday that he would be away from the Senate all of this week.

(21,714 posts)I don't wish cancer on anybody, it is a horrible disease. At least he doesn't have to worry about pre-existing conditions.

(34,136 posts)Glioblastomas are not really treatable unless there is some new experimental treatment I have not read about. They can cut out the tumor, try to keep it from coming back with chemo and radiation, but it pretty much always comes back.
My sister died of glioblastoma cancer in 1993. With surgical intervention and every experimental treatment available at the time she survived about nineteen months after diagnosis. Because her doctoral thesis was on computer tomography of the brain and was published and used as a reference by neurologists at the time she had contacts on the cutting edge of the field then.
Teddy Kennedy was diagnosed with glioblastoma in 2008. With the most aggressive treatment available he survived fifteen months after diagnosis. In twenty five years, there had not been all that much advance in the treatments.
I wish the best for Senator McCain and hope that his family gets as much quality time with him as possible.
