slate "Todays Impeach-O-Meter: Better Skills, Better Jobs Is Not a Good Democratic Slogan"

http://www.slate.com/blogs/the_slatest/2017/07/20/trump_impeachment_chances_better_skills_edition.html

by Ben Mathis-Lilley

Vox's Jeff Stein reports that the Democrats' 2018 national campaign slogan will be ... well, here it is:

I shouldve corrected this immediately; I've deleted original tweet. Full slogan is "A Better Deal: Better Skills, Better Jobs, Better Wages"

— Jeff Stein (@JStein_Vox) July 20, 2017
Orienting a campaign around ideas for addressing the long-term stagnation of middle- and working-class wages doesn't seem like a terrible idea, and the Washington Post's Dave Weigel suggests that progressives may not actually be disappointed with the platform that accompanies the slogan above. Using the phrase "better skills," though, does seem like a terrible idea, because it is a weird and awkward combination of words which implies that the voters who it's directed toward are poorly educated.

This reminder that the Democratic 2018 campaign will involve Democratic messaging "experts" is a good reason to lower our likelihood of impeachment.

In the last 75 years, one party has been the party of working people, fighting for better working conditions, higher pay, and, yes, education for a better-skilled work force.

This message just might find a receptive audience to some of the folks mentioned in this story from two months ago:

...it will be read as "better jobs, better wages for those with better skills." In other words, the professional class, not the working class.

Does it mean that Democrats are offering better training and education so people can get better skills, jobs and wages? Otherwise, it sounds like Democrats are expecting people without boots to pull themselves up by their own bootstraps.

Ties into historical "Fair Deal" and "New Deal". Would help to remind people who's been with them for a long time.

Honestly, I don't know of anything that would avoid cynical snark at this point.

But it's no "Maga-nomics"...

I encountered a woman a few months ago, she told me she was recruited for a focus group of woman voters via Reddit. The focus group was made up almost entirely of university educated childless women, all under 35 - most under 30 who were Reddit users in New York City and participated in political topics on Reddit.

Naturally they really responded favorably to the Trump is Disgusting strategy.
