IMO, Think big and build a system 29minutes from NYC to WashDC at 700 mph.

Is this … is this really happening?

On Wednesday morning, Elon Musk made a strange announcement on Twitter: His Boring Company (yes, that's what it's called) had received “verbal government approval” to build an underground hyperloop, he said. The maglev-powered train thing would pass through New York, Philadelphia, and Baltimore before terminating in good old swampy Washington, DC. All in twenty-nine minutes.

It sounded momentous—but “verbal government approval” isn’t a thing. A White House spokesperson said the administration had conducted “positive conversations” with Musk and Boring Company executives, but declined to comment beyond that.

Even if they got verbal approval from someone in DC, that doesn't negate the requirement for all the proper environmental studies, it doesn't mean that any of the states they plan to go through have approved, it doesn't mean they meet environmental regulations there.

It would be 10+ years just in permitting.

Then we have to deal with the route. You can't just run a train under other people's property, so you have to either buy and easement or do eminent domain the entire route. And you might think it would be easier to just go underneath existing rail lines- but as someone who has dealt with right of way issues and just a simple undergorijdn fiber optic line that needed to cross under a railroad there is nothing in the world worse than dealing with the complex legal issues and bureaucratic nightmare of doing anything on a railroad right of way.

What was quickly done then takes years or decades of study and litigation and permitting now.

Elon Musk knows how to do it.

It's going to be down pretty deep and it will have 11 stations.
A couple of million here and there will take care of it.

He has already tested a proof of concept.

Florida has worked toward bigger goals when is comes to improving infrastructure in the realm of high speed rail. Additionally, the feds aren't even the big players here. Not even close. On top of that, there is no such thing as "verbal approval". It's literally made up.

We need to work on our infrastructure that carries a majority of Americans. That includes new and big ideas. These people that have outright speed as the goal are going about it the wrong way. If this project was completed tomorrow it would only carry a very small percentage of Americans from major hub to major hub. This isn't a project that would get everyday Americans to work.

I have no clue how you wouldn't be staunchly opposed to this. Are you thinking this will be the best way to evacuate NYC? I promise you much better options are available.
