First woman enlists to become a Navy SEAL

http://www.cnn.com/2017/07/21/us/first-female-navy-candidates-seal-trnd/index.html

(CNN)A woman will train with other potential officers this summer in hopes of becoming the first female Navy SEAL.

The candidate, a midshipman, and another woman have enlisted as the first female candidates seeking to join the Navy's special operations teams.

The latter is training for the Special Warfare Combatant-Craft Crewman program, or SWCC.

These women have already made history, but they still face a long road ahead of training and tests before they officially make the cut.

Women weren't allowed to serve in combat roles, including special operation forces such as the SEALs and SWCC, until January 2016. But there were no female applicants in the 18 months since that historic change until now.

The candidates' identities and training progress are confidential to protect their personal security and "career viability as future special operator," Lt. Cmdr. Mark Walton, a spokesman for Naval Special Warfare Command, told CNN.

Good luck soldier!

This is real life GI Jane

I hope Trump doesn't reverse this Obama era reform.

and go where some assholes don't want you to go.

She probably knows what she was getting into and prepared mentally for years for this opportunity.

They opened it to women 18 months ago but no one applied to join until now.

There will be hundreds and hundreds of comments consisting entirely of howls of outrage about "POLITICAL CORRECTNESS RUN AMOK!!!1!1! THERE GOES THE MILITARY!!1! IT'S ALL OVER, FOLKS!!!11!"

The people who post these things are exactly who you think they are.

I posted a news story about the Muslim world's first woman fighter pilot bombing ISIS on Facebook and several Trumpers expressed support with no haters.

When a female Army lieutenant was recently assigned as a tank platoon leader, these same Facebook pages nearly burst into flames from the heat of the hatred expressed in them.

All of the talk about tankers being a brotherhood went out the window. Some of these no doubt MRA-types speculated on what sort of sexual favors she had to perform to get the assignment. A number of them spewed nonsense about the Army having to lower its standards in order to make the 'politically correct' assignment.

I was not proud to be a tanker that day. We should have been expressing pride that this tough, dedicated woman had made American history (women served as tankers in WWII Soviet Russia, and have served in the Israeli Defense Force for decades...). Instead, a bunch of butt-hurt, insecure, 'alpha-dog wanna-bees' went berserk.

You should have heard it when the Air Force opened the "non-traditional" career fields to women. We're all gonna die!! Of course, the fact that women were filling the non-trad jobs during WWII and we somehow managed to win that one never came up.

The butt hurt could have filled up Wilford Hall Med Center and the Brooks Burn Unit. Now there's all female air and ground crews, etc and the Balloon Corps is still flyin', fightin' and fuckin' around.

in the late 80s, I was the only female in a 15 man ATC facility. The facility just failed out two women, and in I walked. I was just a young woman and really had no clue on what crap was going to be throw at me. The scary part, I think it was better for us because men didn't see us as a threat yet. I survived and stuck in the USAF for 8 years.

Man, I hope this young woman makes it. It would be a smart national security issue to have women in spots that the enemy isn't aware they are hiding. I just hope her American red blood boys don't think it's about them. Time will tell.
