Chuck Schumer says single-payer health care is on the table for DemocratsThe Senate Minority Leader said the Democrats have been "too namby-pamby" in the past
CHARLIE MAY SUNDAY, JUL 23, 2017 10:49 AM CDT
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer D-N.Y., discussed the new economic agenda for the Democratic Party moving forward, and said on Sunday that a single-payer health care system is an option thats on the table.
Featured on ABCs This Week, Schumer was asked about a recent poll which showed that 52 percent of Americans felt that the Democratic Party only stands in opposition to President Donald Trump, rather than having an independent identity with a clear message. When asked why Americans dont know what the Democrats stand for, Schumer said some of the responsibility falls on the party.

(13,421 posts)We know it works--it's been in place for a few decades. Contrary to the spin about single payer, I don't ever hear Grandpa or Granny saying they want to go back to the plan they had before they hit the magic Medicare age. Nobody tells seniors what doc to see--they decide that along with whatever part b plan they pick. Nobody is waiting to get that hip replacement or any other surgery beyond the time it takes to get in to see that particular doctor. Medicare successfully demonstrates a single payer system can work.
Having said all that, Medicare can be a lot better with just a few tweaks. It isn't perfect right now, but it's a damn site better than kicking a few million people out of the health care delivery system completely.

Waiting on the inevitable swarm of people I don't recognize to tell me that Medicare will never work, and how bad it sucks...

(28,270 posts)My wife and I have a fantasy that we will escape the redstate hell we are living in to a big blue beautiful state with legal MJ before I die.
Who knows if it will happen. It's a long shot for sure.

(8,090 posts)needs to be taken DOWN. At least PA has medical -- I'm not sure where Gov. Wolf stands on recreational. Hell, even my military contractor bro is on board. He wants to retire to the beautiful beaches of SC, but legal weed will factor into his decision... he's counting down the next 10 years. LOL
Good luck to you and your wife!

(8,090 posts)It's about fucking time. Dems fully control only six states and it *ain't* all about gerrymandering, voter suppression, and the various -isms. Messaging matters! And he's right (as Bernie's right): "...some of the responsibility falls on the party."
2018. Tick-tock.

(61 posts)I saw a pretty good analysis that a lot of "gerrymandering" happens due to Dem insistance on "minority-majority" districts. We have two here in Ohio- any black Dem will win them 75-25 or 80-20. The Dems also win Toledo and Cleveland.
And the RepubliCONs win all the rest 53-47 or 55-45...

(1,428 posts)Democrats do not have to be in the majority to push for Medicare for All. Democrats need to push the Democratic agenda every time. All the time. No more, "We don't have votes" or "I'm not there yet" excuses.
Republicans don't wait for a majority to advocate their agenda. That's why they win and we lose. The American people need to know what we stand for when we're in the majority or the minority. Our message needs to be clear, concise, and consistent. Not some wishy-washy, "Well we're kinda, sorta, for it sometime in the future maybe if we have a majority".

(888 posts)The least we will accept is a public option, doled out subsidized like Medicare.
Like Alli Velshe on CNN said, that is a voluntary path to single payer, Democrats answer "yes"
It's on.
Now it's our job to help Democrats win the Senate and House to make this happen.
Get out and vote it in 15 months, please
