Very sad...but if the Scouts want to continue..that will be in order..
I have read that they have a right wing background, but that doesn't matter..
.............We will see if the apology is given...........We will see

(38,414 posts)I was a scout for a while..politics was out of discussion. But that was long ago. The BSA will or ought to make a sincere apology tomorrow. If it does not. It will forever loose my support and millions of others...Yes millions

(67,101 posts)politics come into discussions. Neither did religion. It was a fun organization and I learned a lot about working with others. It seems it has changed so much. I think millions are really getting fed up with BSA.

(15,543 posts)One of the adult officials could have - and should have - gone to the microphone to assert the so-called values of Scouting, and to point out that the republican Draft-Dodger-in-Chief just PISSED all over those values. The young scouts - being presented with the republican role model for an adult - cheered that ugly, degenerate, and heinous public PISSING.
BSA now = dishonorable, disgraceful, deplorable.

(15,543 posts)One of the scout officials should have gone to the podium after the Republican draft dodger in chief had finished speaking. The officials had a responsibility to speak out and say that that was completely against all the moral lessons allegedly taught by the scouts. They didn't do it. They wimped out. And they have shamed them selves.

(1,907 posts)Needs to resign immediately. He should have stepped up the minute dipshit started that bs. I followed my son all the way from cub scout to eagle scout as a adult leader. And this pissed me off so much. I have posted on the BSA twitter and left a message at their office.

(31,963 posts)So no, it was not an "accident " that he was invited. All Presidents are invited. Clinton spoke to them when he was President. The only President who did not was Obama.

(31,963 posts)All the Presidents spoke in person at least once except Reagan who had been in the hospital. He sent Nancy. The Post says President Obama sent a "brief videotaped message" at the 100th anniversary Jamboree.

(90,617 posts)...that goes back to when they were founded. You can look this up. It's not intended to be political, it's intended to be patriotic. It's intended to inculcate good citizenship.
The ideals of the founders of Scouting included an idealized version of manhood a century ago -- you can look that up too. Some of those notions are what we think of as "liberal" (Scouts are all "brothers" regardless of race, creed, color, or national origin) and some have needed re-examination and updating. They took belief in God as a matter of course, as did nearly the whole of society at the time.
But they did not define that God. Most of society was mainstream Protestant. At a time when casual (and not-so-casual) anti-Semitism and anti-Catholicism were common, individual Scout troops were sponsored by Jewish synagogues and Catholic parishes, and the boys were all considered brother Scouts. Unitarian Universalists also sponsor Scout troops, and they are a non-creedal religion. There are many troops not sponsored by any religious group -- my late father was a Scoutmaster, Aloha Council, Order of the Arrow, and was community based and secular.
I could go on. It has been a wonderful experience for many. The worst thing that ever happened to the Boy Scouts was the rise of the Religious Right, with their intolerance, rigidity, and fear of change. You can see the results of that in our schools and all over the country, not just the BSA. There are people who have resisted, are resisting, and will go on, not giving up on a good thing without a fight.

(102,192 posts)They've never condoned homophobia and would never have allowed this BOOR to address them after all his horrendous comments and hateful policies.
For the few who know nothing about either BSA or the Girl Scouts, they are as distinctly separate groups as they can be. They are now and have always been totally unrelated groups.

(38,414 posts)total boycott .....I cannot remember the BSA ever taking this kind of political stance..against or for a candidate or against a major figure in the USA. It goes beyond anything.. We will see..and I could be completely wrong,,,the officials may leave this alone and do and say nothing..

As others noted, they likely will ride it out.
The "problem" they have is that there are pretty strong "conservative" roots the organization - that isn't to say that there are not a lot of non-deranged members and leaders. But, the "liberal" voices won't carry weight greater than the conservative voices.
