(28,394 posts)Good for that father. I would have done exactly the same. We were a scouting family for a number of years.

(6,399 posts)Cardbooard was prohibited so no signs could be made
And if a scout did not want to attend the speech, they had to sit at their campsite, supervised, doing *nothing* the whole time.
I also saw one post that said that all activities for the day were canceled at 10 since there has to be on-site stuff for POTUS visit planning and security. So a really crappy day for most of the kids.

(28,394 posts)Terrible how those boys and young men were held hostage by a malignant narcissist.

(32,634 posts)There are several BSA threads today, but this is specifically about the irate parents posting on Facebook.
Their kids are at the Jamboree this week (most are not with parents) so these kids have no clue how Trump has used them.
The kids don't even know what they're cheering and booing for. Trump hasn't had a non-judgmental audience like that since last year. This should never have happened and the parents are livid.

(27,803 posts)is address his comments and make clear that they don't stand by them. And it's also up to the troop leaders to discuss the speech, what happened, and in particular how inappropriate it was to boo Obama and HRC.
Obviously Trump is completely unpredictable, though this seems beyond the pale even for him. I think the kids were thrown into an untenable situation. There should have been no occasion for booing anyone, but who knew that's the bent the speech was going to take? Kids do what the kids around them do.
I guess - to me - the best response by the BSA would be to take the opportunity to train their members to listen to a speech but not necessarily get egged on to be boors (just because a boor is speaking to you). Oh, and they can officially apologize to both Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, along with anyone else who was insulted.
I'm not really holding my breath, but to me, if they want to do damage control, that's what they need to do.

(24,653 posts)It's also highly appropriate to decline to invite this President given his predictably shitty behavior.
LisaM
(27,803 posts)And it would set a dangerous precedent for not inviting future Presidents based on like or dislike.
I've worried ever since he took office that he's going to totally demean the Presidency, and that's what I see happening, just a few months in.

(20,998 posts)If nothing else, tRump*s "performance" at the Jamboree should leave no question in anyone's mind about his potential behavior. The man is deeply, deeply flawed.

(27,803 posts)Believe me, I dislike him as much ore more as the next person, but I'd have thought that even he could briefly hold it together when talking to kids.

Surely you jest.
🤣
no, no, no. he is sick. really and truly unwell. his behavior is predictable; he may constantly shock people with the details, but the behavior will not change.

(24,653 posts)I cannot believe people are surprised he acted so inappropriately. He's demonstrated time and time and time again that he is completely incapable!

(49,000 posts)The big picture (low-class jerk using occasion for political purposes) was very predictable.

It was a given that he'd be at very least inappropriate.

Deplorable.

(999 posts)YPT as it is known in Scouting is the Holy Grail iof Scouting. Every parent who Is involved in Scouting Is required to take the training and it must be renewed every two years. Trumps comment about yachts and his alluding to orgies and drugs is a clear violation of this policy. Under normal circumstances this matter would be reported to the District Counsel and in all likelihood the adult would be removed from that Pack, Troop or Venture Crew. It does not matter that their were thousands of adult leaders there. It only matters that Trump said theses things in front of minors. I received an email from our Distrrict Rep regarding the very weak response from the national office and I emailed him a response. I am going to send an email to National Headquarters regarding Trumps clear violation of the YPT policy.

2017 NATIONAL JAMBOREE PRESIDENTIAL VISIT RESPONSE
The Boy Scouts of America is wholly non-partisan and does not promote any one position, product, service, political candidate or philosophy.
The invitation for the sitting U.S. President to visit the National Jamboree is a long-standing tradition and is in no way an endorsement of any political party or specific policies.
Every sitting U.S. President has served as the BSAs honorary president. It is our long-standing custom to invite the U.S. President to the National Jamboree.
Scouting is a platform for young people to observe and learn about civics, but it is not a platform for politicized messages. To use Scouting for that purpose is poor judgement and inappropriate behavior.
