by Aidan McLaughlin | 10:28 am, July 26th, 2017
President Donald Trump announced on Twitter Wednesday that the U.S. military with not will not accept or allow transgender people to serve in any capacity.
-snip-
Trumps ban on transgender service members is his latest controversial foray into the culture wars, and will likely be well-received by his far-right base but is already facing intense blowback from critics.
The reaction on Twitter to the new policy came in the form of an eruption of outrage, paired with an analysis of the presidents motives. Many pointed out that Trump is grossly exaggerating the cost burden of transgender troops on the military, while others noted this appears to be a political move geared at reviving his popularity amongst a base turned off by his attacks on A.G. Jeff Sessions.
Others remarked on the thousands of transgender people already serving in the military, as well as Trumps own draft-dodging and a number of Democratic lawmakers joined in the pile-on:

(13,461 posts)The daily disregard for the people of this nation. I don't know what will happen if Trump serves 4 years? I couldn't have even imagined a a President this bad! Putin has more imagination than I do for sure.

Sick and tired of the twitter heroism. In ten minutes it will go straight into the memory hole.

(6,376 posts)You are correct. People are masters of being "outraged" but never doing anything about it.
I believe it's called social media activism.

(11,845 posts)You can lead without being in the majority. I want to get them out from behind their keyboards and start actually leading resistance. Why is ot on us, the ccitizens, to lead the resistance? They have been elected to lead and I'm just not seeing it and am tired of being played by fake heroics and heartfelt tweets followed by requests for money and signifying nothing.

(11,845 posts)Why are you so invested in the impotence of your elected leadership? You do realize that there is a difference between leading and legislating. Perhaps our elected Democratic officials are being blocked from moving legislation, but that does not preclude them from LEADING.
You know, getting in front of the people and presenting a plan for the Resistance. Taking part in the resistance. Speaking out in front of a microphone instead if a key pad. LEADERSHIP.

(11,845 posts)I simply disagree. The Republicans hold the White House, the Senate, The Congress, State Legislatures, and State Governorships. We got our asses handed to us in election cycles throughout the Obama administration.
What we have are moments not a movement. I am not seeing a movement in any of this.
Just my opinion.

(31,011 posts)I'm not looking to fight either.
Just because you're not seeing Dems marching or speaking in front of protesters doesn't mean they're not fighting for us.
Jeff Merkley is adding 100 amendments. That's just one of the ways they are fighting.
Not only that, the repukes are in such turmoil they can't even agree on how to get rid of Obamacare and what to replace it with. They are in a mess.
When the Dems had all three, a lot got done in short order. The repubs can't even agree on how to take out the damn trash. LOL

(31,011 posts)They are doing what they can and there is a battle ahead in the 2018 election cycle. Money is needed to fund candidates that will turn over the house and the senate.
