Or both?
I can't think of any other philisophical or empirical reasons for announcing such a policy.

to shore up their support for when the Russia investigation gets worse for him and mainstream GOPers start defecting. Also allowing trans people in the military was one more thing Obama did, and Trump is trying to get rid of all traces of Obama.

(5,737 posts)THIS is the reason for the announcement. The GOP learned when bush was running against Kerry. Remember every time Kerry was poised for a nice "bounce"? A credible threat to the US was announced and people too their eyes off of Kerry. Trump isn't smart enough to do this. But the GOP sure had al the pieces in place and the knowhow.

(7,808 posts)Since Gingrich was speaker. The reichwing Congress and their media mouthpieces on TV, radio, and print have been working on for decades - destroy everything liberal. WE are the enemy they need to keep their minions in line and ready to fight.
I have come to the conclusion that human beings just aren't that intelligent. We're basically chimpanzees with electronic devices.

(35,274 posts)I suspect he just thinks what he's doing is right.
"Xian extremism" would imply he's aware and cares about what others think, and is acting because of that. I doubt the first as well as the second.
Trump doesn't like Obama. But I think he defines himself in terms of Obama rather less than we do. A lot of what (R) didn't like about Obama were his policies. If he'd been Barry O'Barnes, they'd still be out gunning for his GLBTQI policies (and a lot of other ones). I just don't think may would have said, "Ooh, look, the president's white, so while I've been against gay marriage and letting gays in the military since I was 13, I'm going to go along with him on this because even though he's a Democrat and I hate this policy, well, he's got a really swell skin color." His race didn't help, his approach didn't help, but sometimes policy differences really are just policy differences.
I go with Occam here.
