What happens to those already currently serving?

(90,758 posts)will probably use DADT practices / DADT discharges as a template. Seems the most likely course. (I can't believe this is happening yet I can believe it, considering Trump and his theocratic right-wing cabinet. I am pissed.)
Soldiers then got a general discharge (and less than honorable) as mentally unfit, with a loss of pension/benefits, etc.
The thing is, soldiers have been living and serving openly as transgender for about a year now. If the ban becomes legal, the soldiers living and serving openly will be the first to go. Talk about being blindsided.
The law said they could be who they are (under Obama) and now under Trump, they will be the first to be harmed...the first to be ousted.
Civil rights groups are already preparing lawsuits and challenges.
It's beyond an outrage, what Trump is doing. It's cruel, vicious, callous, and just plain ignorant.

(90,758 posts)New enlistments of recruits who are transgender have already been deferred.
So, the futures they were planning on are no longer.

(5,455 posts)Post Op will probably be allowed to continue to serve presuming they meet standards and don't require any medications or treatment specific to being transgender,
Pre op will be discharged likely with a honorable discharge or some other discharge status that does not reflect negatively on a person.
In the end this will be decided in the courtroom and it's unlikely that the ruling court will allow pre op transgender individuals to serve.
As an FYI, here is a list of medical conditions the military can deny a person entrance into the military: http://www.military.com/join-armed-forces/disqualifiers-medical-conditions.html
While not directly applicable to the issue being discussed, it does indicate that the military is given a great deal more latitude on who is allowed in then most civilian employers are.
On edit: Here is another link of disqualifiers for military service, there are the obvious ones such as for a criminal background, but other reasons also include the number and placement of tattoos: http://army.com/info/usa/disqualifiers
