in the 1990s. I joined that group around 1996, and snopes was such a natural outgrowth from the newsgroup. I don't remember David Mikkelson's posting all that often, but his wife Barbara was a mainstay. My favorite poster was Harry M.F. Teasley, who created Lara Croft.

I'm overjoyed that snopes apparently will survive, and you're right about its being more important than ever.
