Pence: Millions losing health insurance is the very essence of living in a free society
By Oliver Willis | July 26, 2017
Mike Pence callously described the scenario in which millions would lose coverage under the Republican health care bill as "the very essence of living in a free society," dismissing the harsh reality of such a negative policy.
Fox News
Mike Pence has a seriously disturbing view of freedom.
Sitting down for a prime-time interview with Fox News host and favorite of neo-Nazis Tucker Carlson, Pence offered an offensive take on the devastating result of the health care repeal bill that he, Donald Trump, and congressional Republicans are insistently pushing and which would cause millions of Americans to lose their health insurance.
Carlson asked Pence if the repeal effort would be worth it if the outcome led to millions fewer Americans having health insurance.
In response, Pence said the very essence of living in a free society is people get to make their own decisions, accepting the destructive results of the legislation as the price of doing business and enacting the tax cuts for the wealthy tucked inside the bill.
CARLSON: But if after a year or two of giving people more choices, millions fewer Americans had health insurance, would that be worth it?
PENCE: Well, its its the very essence of living in a free society is people get to make their own decisions. But the president and I truly believe that if you lower the cost of health insurance, if you give Americans more choices in health insurance, that more Americans will choose, more employers will choose, to have and offer health insurance to their employees and have health insurance for their families.

(50,236 posts)they opine on the freedom to not have health insurance is that when the uninsured person falls down a flight of stairs and breaks both legs, it's taxpayers and people covered by insurance who end up with the bill for their care.

Having someone as President that thinks like this is truly horrifying to contemplate.
Using this reasoning if are not able to afford water, food, Healthcare...then you are free to die. The blessings of liberty I suppose. Freedom is just another word for nothing left to lose (Me and Bobby McGee).
There are so many in the Republican Party that think this way... Is it a virus? A worm from outer space that has infected their brains?
They call themselves Christian, but in their hearts they would be at home with the worshippers of Baal.

(12,640 posts)Baal was a Caananite weather god who hated snakes, the brother of Hadad, a fertility god. He also hated snakes, just like the other period Levant weather deities eventually known as Yaweh or El. He had seasonal sacrifices, along with the typical emergency sacrifices. Like most gods of the time, he was pretty capricious. But other the fear of pissing him off and suffering bad weather, he was generally considered beneficial, and when his worshipers merged him with his brother, he turned into the head of gods or a god of kingship - because good harvests, healthy livestock, and continuing pleasant weather was critical for a tribe's long term survival.
The monotheistic Israelites considered him more of competition to their god, rather than particularly evil god. Since their god was jealous, Baal worship had to be totally discredited.
Mammon, now - that's the one the Evilangelicals really worship. FWIW, Mammon isn't really a god, it's the "spirit" or practice of love for immediate power and all it's trappings over all else - a totally nihilistic philosophy and spirituality. Sort of like the "Dark side of the Force"

(9,808 posts)Born in 59, his parents owned a chain of gas stations (at which they didn't shift work) partially inherited. 60s gas stations were service stations -- oil, tires, repairs and fuel. Service stations printed money in the 60s. He was too young for Vietnam (turned 18 in '77) so that was never a worry for him. Went to college on his parents' dime, through law school. Spent almost no time in private practice, probably because his extremely limited record doesn't look very good. Used campaign funds to support himself (not illegal at the time); seems to have run for the contributions at least twice.
He's been on Wingnut Welfare or the public purse since 1988.
Dollars to donuts, he's never dealt with any of the household paperwork. That's "Mother's" job. He maybe signs a policy once a year, maybe sees a doctor when Mother tells him to go, doesn't make his own appointments, isn't his own healthcare advocate, never took a day of sick/vacation/PTO to care for his own children. If she got hit by the proverbial bus, he would have no clue how to run the household.
He is so isolated in his privileged bubble he has no clue. He has no concept of a "free society" because he's never been part of one that wasn't built for his benefit. He's always had the cheat codes. And it shows. He's an idjit, as my grandfather used to say.

(38,302 posts)I figured he was born in the 'forties at the very latest, maybe one of those guys too young for Korea, too old for Vietnam. I didn't even bother to look at his age, didn't realize the empty evil consuming his soul had reached the surface like that.
What the hell happened to him? Was he bitten by a Reagan vampire? Can he see himself in a mirror?

(16,850 posts)In the wordview of these sick fucks, there's no place for universal coverage because it would interfere with "freedom"...the only "free society" these slugs care about is the free market and the ability to make profit at the expense of screwing people. There's is no "freedom of choice" if that choice is unattainable.

(12,564 posts)According to Stephen Colbert's (the character, not the person) definition of "truthiness" Pense and Trump nail it: believing that something is true despite evidence to the contrary.
We've had a 30 year experiment of "free (unregulated) markets" and lower taxes on the rich, and the result is out country is worse off by every metric than any other country in the world. Well, not every metric -- we have a larger military force than the next five countries combined.
