appears to me that he was deliberately throwing it in McConnell's face to humiliate him - the thumbs down gesture was completely unnecessary and was just rubbing it in even more. I am beginning to think that McCain voted "Yes" on the procedural vote just so he could vote "NO" to kill the bill once and for all.

Trump is not the only one who can hold a grudge.

Apparently Trump talked to him by phone on the Senate floor prior to the vote. Would love to know what was said.

Came back from what we thought his death bed to make and serve trump a shit sandwich.

which preceded the Skinny Bill.

Many Senators, on both sides of the aisle, voted by coming down to the table and used a thumbs up or thumbs down gesture to illustrate their vote. So apparently McCain's gesture was not out of the ordinary.

Over the years, watching many Senate votes, it seems to me that more Senators come the center to record their votes than do it vocally from their seats.

But I totally agree with your premise. I think McConnell was trying to intimidate him when he was voting. And in classic, Republican hypocrisy, McConnell (who maneuvered himself out the RESERVES during Viet Nam after 4 months http://www.huffingtonpost.com/michael-rogers/what-is-mitch-mcconnell-h_b_137083.html), thought he could intimidate and bully a man who spent 5 years as a prisoner of war.

That whole party has descended in a morass of bullying, lying, and fealty to the wealthy. Unless and until the decent, THINKING Republicans (I've got more than one in my family) get control of their party again, it's going to continue to spiral down until it crashes. Which will not be a bad thing. This current incarnation of the Republican Party needs to be crushed. They're nothing but Nazis who smile.

They were in the cloakroom together where Pence was trying to convince him to vote yes. Then Pence got him on the phone with Trump. McCain's name was called while he was in there so by the time McCain came out he did not have to wait for his name in the roll. Upon entrance he proceeded straight to the front until he was visible to McConnell, put out his hand to get the clerk's attention, and upon recognition turned his thumb down and said, "No." Then he looked straight at McConnell's face, turned, and proceeded to his seat.

Close proximity. Hands folded. Looks like his chin is down - which means his face is slanted such that his EYES are full forward. Looks as though he's leading with his eyes. Like a stink-eye. Like when a bull hunkers down, ready to charge. NOT leading with the chin. Leading with your eyes. Looking straight through his eyebrows at you, and heavier eyebrow presence can be read as meanness or toughness or anger or aggression. He's trying to bully McCain. Or make him feel extra shitty and worried about repercussions.

Psy ops, and from everything I've read about McConnell, he's an expert tactician - which means he knows a lot about psy ops. Domination, perceptions of toughness and/or bullying. Menacing. IMPLIED menacing. Body language tells you a lot. He's in a fighting stance, quiet and contained (he's not shaking fists or yelling with eyes bulging and maybe leading with his chin, such as it is). But ready to do damage or maybe musing over any number of ways to punish McCain for the way he voted.

Just look at the body language. The woman in the ochre jacket who's level-faced and watching McCain - her chin isn't down, the guy straining to see behind her, the guy seated between them looking straight ahead, the bearded guy who also seems to be looking at McCain fairly level-faced.

Either McConnell is hanging his head in disgust and disappointment and pondering his failure - the one with HIS name on it as Senate Majority Leader, or he's looking daggers at McCain for having "failed him".

They truly are evil people.
