She couldn't run as an independent without write in due to a sore loser law so she ran as one with a write in. She did make clear she would caucus with the GOP and is calling herself a Republican now.

My guess is that Collins and Murkowski were considered to be lost causes from Day One, but McCain's vote for the motion to proceed made them think he'd go along with the bill. Having one's expectations disappointed always leads to more anger.

Plus, of course, they've hated McCain for years -- not that any of them are Collins or Murkowski fans, but neither of them has come in for the sustained venom directed at McCain.
