Senate Republicans to make another attempt at Obamacare repeal

Senate Republicans’ party-line attempts to repeal Obamacare aren’t dead just yet.

Some congressional Republicans and President Donald Trump aren’t giving up on their effort to roll back the health care law and are trying to write legislation that could get 50 Republican votes, according to multiple administration and Capitol Hill sources.

Trump met with three Republican senators on Friday about a proposal from Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.). to block grant federal health care funding to the states and keep much of Obamacare’s tax regime. White House officials also met with House Freedom Caucus chairman Mark Meadows (R-N.C.), according to two sources familiar with the meeting.

Trump seemed optimistic about moving forward on the bill on Friday after the shocking setback this week appeared to cripple his legislative agenda, according to a White House official. Yet several senior Republican Senate aides and allies of GOP leaders cautioned against any feelings of momentum coming from the White House on Saturday, particularly after Trump again instructed Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) to change the Senate rules to a simple majority and gut the legislative filibuster.

McConnell has resisted such a suggestion publicly and has been pushing back against Trump privately, according to people familiar with their interactions. One person close to McConnell said Trump has asked McConnell personally to change the rules but said no.

Trump will just get someone that is willing to change the rules.

Showdown Senate - Trump vs McConnell.

I think that McConnell is at a disadvantage here.

A little primer on how Congress works may be instructive here.

the White House has no power over Congress, even if sometimes they work together towards a common goal. That was the whole point of the WH/Congress/ SCOTUS balance of power.

In order for any rules to be changed, they have to be voted on.
McConnell, as Majority Leader, is the one who decides which laws are gonna be voted on.
He's not gonna let a law that reduces Congressional power, esp,Majority Leader power, come to a vote.

10. How Many People Has Trump Axed So Far....

I think Rachel has a tally. He just got rid of both Spicer & Priebus. He's working now on Sessions & then Mueller. He'll begin by saying he's lost confidence in McConnell. That will create a stir in the MSM and they will aid Trump in his being able to move McConnell aside. Somebody posted elsewhere on DU that even McConnell's caucus don't like him. This will start discussion in the MSM and in the Senate who could do a better job. Before long there will be a Trump instigated movement in the Senate to come up with a stronger person to be the majority leader. Some Senators willing to oblige Trump - and some with big egos - will push to take a vote to repeal & replace McConnell. Someone will emerge as the replacement and coincidentally he will be a Trump sycophant. You'll wake up to a Trump tweet saying he thanks McConnell for all he and Trump accomplished together and he wants everyone to support the new majority leader of the Senate who will take things to new heights and fulfill all those promises made by the Repugs and Trump. The first order of business in order to make good on the promises is to change the filibuster rules of the Senate. And voila!!! There you have a scenario as to how Trump will accomplish this. Sound familiar? Stranger things have happened.

I think it's highly unlikely, at least until January 2019 when he would have to be re-elected majority leader. Trump had the power to fire those others you mentioned but he has no such power over McConnell and I suspect a lot of Senators would resist him interfering with their processes.

Trump can't make the Senate do anything nor can he fire anyone in the Senate. All he can do is beg the Senate to do what he wants.

Three co equal branches of government.

6. A couple years ago, I saw an article on how much the repeal of ACA had cost up to that point...

It seemed like it had been $41M, but my head isn't always spot on...it was around that area. It also seemed like it was running $1M per try. Is there some place that keeps track of those costs. I think this exercise in futility should have a cost penned to it for the public to see how much is being wasted. Same with those Hillary Benghazi and email hearings.

How long does it take for the Repubs to catch on to what failure looks like and costs? They waste more money than they save.

than spend all its time trying to repeal Obamacare, then maybe they should all go home for the rest of the summer.

Surely there is some other legislation that needs to be considered.

9. The Graham bill would fail too.

Not much different than the first bill the Senate voted on and it only got 43 votes. Even if it could get 50 votes it could be filibustered. Even if Trump wants to get rid of the filibuster there isn't 50 votes in the Senate to end the filibuster.
