Anything helps, reads the sign that Megan Doudney lays out in front of her baby buggy as she nestles her 6-week-old infant in her arms while panhandling on San Franciscos Market Street.
But the 34-year-old homeless mother has gotten a lot more than the financial help she was hoping for.
While Doudney has received an outpouring of support from some, others have unleashed a maelstrom of criticism on social media against her and panhandling with children that have turned into face-to-face confrontations on the street and 911 calls reporting her.
Its just harassment, said the mother, who is currently staying with her baby and two dogs at a city-funded, temporary family shelter run by Hamilton Families. Doudney, who has a severe back condition and receives social security payments, said she used the money she collected panhandling to cover extra expenses and to save money for a future deposit on an apartment.

(16,245 posts)All of those people sticking their nose in are not actually doing ANYTHING to help. Why not give her a room in their house? But NOOOO, none of these people would ever consider that the simplest solution to homelessness is GIVING THEM SOMEPLACE TO LIVE. There are plenty of people with extra rooms out there but every last one of them will say no to that, while at the same time criticizing this woman for being homeless. I would bet they all call themselves "Christian" as well.

(63,057 posts)a mob of endlessly self-declared Christians completely lost its collective shit at the thought of a nearby town potentially hosting a few dozen Syrian refugees. They had a laundry list of excuse to help them insist that their objection isn't racist or xenophobic, of course, and when I mocked their bigotry by quoting scripture to them verbatim, they told me that I was taking the words out of context.
In our fine nation of Christian values, you will find no bigot more unabashed than an alleged Christian.
