1 World Is Not Enough For ALL The People. Malthus In The Wings. Family Values Degrade Planet.

Look around at all the turmoil on this planet. There are too many failed states and the environment is groaning because human being are too successful at breeding. Of course having children is ok and a good thing, but the adage that there can be too much of a good thing applies.

We are facing the Malthusian scenario. The new US policy towards reproductive issues will exacerbate the problem. And the religious myth that GOD will provide for all is absurd. Depending some mythical personal Bronze Age God to square things with the planet and its ability to sustain life.

Face it we are no less vulnerable than the dinosaurs than any other creature. UN studies on protein production and the ability of the oceans to continue to provide look dire. Yet we ignore the obvious.

Now family values are ok and even necessary. However how many children are enough? What ever happened to ZPG and replacement policies. Now families encouraged to have as many as you like or can afford.

We cannot sustain the 7 billion we have now. 9 or 10 billion will obvious be too many. Wars, famine and pestilence are already on the rise.

We could likely feed the whole world and then some if we stopped passing food humans can eat through animals that are too expensive for most humans to buy, the bits and pieces neatly wrapped in cellophane in the supermarket.

However, another issue will rear its head in this country if women are enslaved again and that's the disappearance of jobs, something that will continue to happen for most of the children who are produced. That will produce a massive underclass of people who are not going to be happy living in cardboard and subsisting on garbage.

Like any species, we expand to the limit environment's ability to support us, no matter how big the environment is. when we reach that limit, we die back, again like any other species. Our brains allowed us to stretch the world's carrying capacity this far. That rubber band appears to be about to snap.

It doesn't matter which problem you look at, global warming, deforestation, environmental degradation of all types, the chaos and bloodletting in the Middle East, the 6th major extinction--it all ties back to overpopulation.

When I was in college back in the 70s a lot of us talked about it and read books about it and tried to figure out how to address it. China even tried to do something about it. India chose to do nothing. So, now India is the most populous planet on the globe and China has dropped their one child policy ( The one child policy was a very dictatorial ham-fisted approach to spiraling overpopulation that had some very strange side effects in their society).

The truth is staring us in the face is that there are just too damn many of us. The problem of overpopulation is absolutely unsolvable when you couple that with fundamentalist religions that demand their followers breed without restraint.

Scientists are warning us that the system is blinking red. We are on unsustainable path. We are using far more resources than the world can supply and we're doing it in a very very short period of time.

The 'book' starts and ends that way.

In the middle, we were kind of asked to take care of the place - and each other.

But God is all-knowing, isn't he?
