A month after the “Stained Banner” was adopted, Lee needed to surrender. He didn’t happen to have any white cloth, so one of his men looted a white linen towel from one of the houses near where Lee was staying. This towel (which used to be a lot whiter, 150 years ago!) was used as a flag of truce in order for Lee to surrender to Grant at Appomattox.
