By Fernando Alfonso III | Updated 4:35 pm, Friday, September 1, 2017
Gas shortages around Austin have forces Texans to take extreme measures when it comes to collecting fuel.
As Hurricane Harvey's hardest hit areas continue to dry out this weekend, major cities like Austin are facing a gas shortage crisis that have inspired at least one man to go to extreme measures for fuel.
Motorists in Texas' largest cities have overreacted to Harvey's impact on Houston's energy industry by rushing to the pump.
A glance at tracker.gasbuddy.com shows numerous gas stations in San Antonio, Austin, and Dallas completely out of fuel as of 11:45 a. Friday.
A photo of one man allegedly shows him filling up what appears to be dark garbage cans sitting in the back of his truck at an Austin-area gas station sometime over the past 24 hours.

(60,010 posts)She filled up in her area yesterday, and even asked about any gas supply problems, was told no, "unless people THINK there is a shortage, then they will create one".
sure enough........
Smart people all over the Gulf coast from Texas to Fla. filled up 2-3 days before Harvey hit.
god knows how many of the est. 40,000 cars ( so far) that drowned did so with a full tank.

(60,010 posts)Don't know if you are old enough to remember this, but true story.
In early 1970s, when Johnny Carson was King of late night TV ( he mentored Jay Leno who took over the show)
Johnny made a casual remark, actually a small joke, about a toilet paper shortage.
Not a word of truth to it.
and within 24 hours there was a toilet paper shortage across the nation, as people ran to stock up.
He actually had to apologize for it on the air.
That is how it can happen.

(5,521 posts)I've seen mechanics throw lit cigarette butts into gasoline filled containers used to clean parts. It scared the crap out of me the first time I saw it. Now once this idiot's gas spills, it's ripe for an explosion.

(16,850 posts)But if this dude lights a hypothetical cigarette, after filling up these containers....when he starts out from the station to head home..,do you think some of the contents of his buckets might spill out??? Judging from the way he's filling these trash cans, I'd say yes! So if the tailgate is saturated with fumes, then the resultant fire wouldn't be surprising, if the driver lit up a smoke!

(1,204 posts)Idiots like this are pissing me off. I am glad I just happened to fill up on Wednesday night. On my way home today I was looking to see if any of the stations on the route had gas yet. Nothing. Either they haven't refilled or people drained it as soon as they did. Probably filling up trash bags with gas.
