On behalf of the progeny of James Buchanan I will state it is nice of Donald Trump that he has only taken a scant seven months to replace him as the worst president in the history of the republic.

But I guarantee, there will be no closeting next time next time somebody other than a hetero runs for the office.

That is about the only "posiitive" I have observed since he came down the golden escalator.

(51,129 posts)Buchanan aspired to be a president who would rank in history with George Washington.[1] His inability to address the sharply divided pro-slavery and anti-slavery partisans with a unifying principle on the brink of the Civil War has led to his consistent ranking by historians as one of the worst presidents in American history. Historians who participated in a 2006 survey voted his failure to deal with secession the worst presidential mistake ever made.[2] wiki

(2,521 posts)So Buchanan may still be worse. Yet, it is still early days in the Trump presidency.

(11,175 posts)During Buchanan's administration, several states adopted resolutions of secession, leading to the Civil War with capital letters (and with 600,000 deaths). For my money, he's still the worst.
For damage done in the first eight months, however, I think Trump is the worst. At this point he's not the worst overall but he's easily won the Outstanding Rookie award. If he can stay in office for the rest of his term, he has a real chance to overtake Buchanan.
