He announces that he's ending it in 6 months and throws the issue to Congress just as the 2018 election season is in full swing. Congress, which can't organize enough votes to take a collective piss, will never be able to enact legislation in 6 months and, if Congress manages to amass the votes to abolish DACA, implementation will be a nightmare reminiscent of Hitler's deportation of the Jews. If Congress enacts legislation to save DACA, Trump will have to veto it and Congress will have to override his veto. Any legislation that Congress passes will be challenged in court by the right and the issue of DACA will fester right into the 2020 election season.
Meanwhile, Canada, whose population is aging, will open its borders to these young, educated, english speaking DACA kids...a win for Canada and a loss for US.
I am also betting that deep in the rotting hearts of Trump's advisors like Bannon, Miller and Sessions is the hope that when and if DACA kids are deported, their families will follow.
Just my random thoughts...

(25,224 posts)that extend the Dreamers stay here in the U.S. to 2020? Does that scenario buy them more time?
If it does and in 2020 the Dems take back the Presidency - then they can fix it permanently.

(13,877 posts)sort of a court order staying deportations. Trump should have stayed away from DACA because whatever he does will be bad for him and the Republican party.

(73,506 posts)James Carroll's classic "House of War" details how this struggle was won in the 1980s. Democracy and social justice are on-going conflicts that each generation has the responsibility -- and the ability -- to participate in. There will be a response to the alt-right's attempts to demonize these good young Americans.

Between a rock and a hard place which is where they belong short of out of office.

(53,410 posts)He truly is keeping his promise of destroying the status quo. Too bad he isn't trying to put something better in place.
Who's going to vote for the destruction of DACA enablers? Not the 65% who disagree with Trump.

(1,036 posts)If Canada is going to open their borders to these people, why have they not done it already?
As many have found out, it is not that easy to move to Canada. Canada may take the 15 year old, but will they take the family of the 15 year old? If they will take these people, why have they not taken them already?

(13,877 posts)may be reflecting my own feelings on this but if I was Canada, I would begin planning for an influx of these people. I'd want to be sure there was adequate housing and jobs for them.

(17,276 posts)Pros: Trump gets to throw a bone to his racist base and shore up his own popularity.
Cons: continued and increasing unpopularity with the other 30% of the population, mire down the Congress with impossible legislation, risk possible loss of GOP majority in Congress, tie up the courts in challenges to the legislation if it ever gets that far.
Looks overall good for the Dems and harmless (impotent) enough to the DACA kids who would be affected.

(4,252 posts)Many who to Canada love it and stay forever.
I heard, Canada was stopping the flow of immigrants from their southern border. Unless something has changed.

(58,785 posts)Not quite up there with packed train cars headed for death camps, but many Repubs do not want them deported, and it's easy to see individual heartbreaking stories, including tragedies, lasting into 2020. Court cases of some who came back without documentation and challenged the law.
Canada allows new immigrants with skills needed, and some of these good people would be just the right kind. I'm not sure Canada overall would be interested in taking in even 400K Hispanics, though. Canada has plenty of bigots of its own who'd act up.
Also, important, wage growth has been so low that young people are actually dropping out of the jobs market right now. A bunch of new immigrants forced to compete for entry level jobs probably would not be welcomed by many, even if the government somehow felt the labor force needed them.
