(4,646 posts)I actually had a relative spewing panic on FB today that Irma is going to be a category 6 hurricane, maybe based on that headline. Some people aren't smart enough to read the article itself.

(34,120 posts)Tallahassee had it bad last fall with Hermine - and we're still cleaning up, especially since we had several bad winter storms that brought down more trees and did more damage.
Maybe I will go out and buy a generator. Last fall some friends lent me theirs once they got power. But I should have my own - and if they don't need theirs at their house, we can use it to run the well so we have water for the horses.

(24,554 posts)There is a cold front arriving along the upper GOM coast. It will arrive in South Central Texas on Wednesday. The cold front is also forecast for Pensacola. (Can't remember the day)
I doubt the cold front will dip into S. Florida and I have no idea if it will dip as far south as Orlando.
I'm thinking the cold front will steer Irma away from the GOM. At the very least, it will shear the northern feeder bands.
ETA: Just checked local forecast. I'm a 29.5 degrees N latitude. Low temps are supposed to dip into the low 60s. Average low this time of year is 73. So, it seems like a strong cold front.

(16,133 posts)but that would be willing harm to my NC democratic buds. No can do that.
Hopefully it just makes a circle and spins in one place in the Atlantic.

(14,565 posts)That model actually has a weird turn to the northeast out of Cuba, with Irma skirting the shore near Miami before heading northwest directly toward West Palm Beach

It's important to be aware and not post bullshit in a potentially disastrous situation. Someone might take you seriously and pay for it with their life. Grow up.

But that could easily change. Keep a close eye on it. It just went to Cat 4.

(11,949 posts)Just went out and bought a second propane bottle and 2 bags of charcoal. Being from Louisiana I have multiple propane cooking devices in the garage. Still have about half a deer in the freezer I need to cook up anyway.
No danger of flooding on the hill I live so as long as my roof holds I will be ok.
Buying the beer and bourbon tomorrow.
I really hope it turns hard north and out to sea but that does not seem likely.
Have a nice evening.

(34,170 posts)The only thing that might save it is if it goes over Cuba & the mountains shred it before it can regenerate. Wow.

Talked to my 88 YO aunt this weekend about the 1938 Hurricane.
They had no warning - but the air felt different before it hit.
Lost many trees in her yard - but they missed the car.
